I left you a message asking which loop do you put the yarn through. a neighbor said there was a top, bottom and a middle, I think. She put it in the middle and it looks fine but wanted to know which is correct before she helps me with it. Thanks much.

Luv all of your hats and have tried my hand at a few and with soe luck they have faired well.
Like a few of your other posters, I am also looking for a crochet raffia hat pattern.

I would also like to ask you - what is the best raffia to crochet with.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,

I am a beginner and I'm just confused about what it means to double stitch 11 in the first chain. I'm not sure how to do that...this could be a very silly question but as I said I am a beginner and any help would be appreciated greatly! Thank you!

I was looking for an easy hat pattern the other night. It's been unusually cold here in Seattle and I had lost the one hat I had. This pattern was so great and I have already gotten many compliments - it's NOT ugly, but actually cute. I am also a breast cancer survivor and have decided to make several of these for chemo patients. I lost my hair during the summer, so really didn't need a heavy hat, but I can imagine that those that are going through chemo in the winter it can be quite chilly. Anyway, thanks for the pattern.

I love the Hat made one for me in orange in a M hook everyone loves it can't believe I made it. That was kind of big so I tried to make one smaller in dark and light blues in a L hook my eight year old stole it off the coffee table before I could do the last row of single crochets and loves it I made The Big Man a two tone green in a L hook and My 11 year old wants red and black so far it is turning out to be the ugly hat of the bunch but hey 11 year old boys are unique in their styles. Also Big Man says I can make everyone hats for Christmas looking forward to it. Maybe he does not realize if I run out of yarn I will just have to go out and buy more hahaha

Thanks Dot
I've been looking for a hat pattern suitable for a man and this is it!
I think I'll even use the stitch pattern to make a matching scarf.
I'm almost 80. Have been knitting and crocheting since I was about 10 years old. Made so many things.
Now I look for fast & easy ones - LOL

P.S. Great way to use up small amounts of yarn :-)

Hi April, what a nice gift for your friend. Thanks for telling me about your hat. It sounds great. I've been using an N hook on this pattern for all the hats I make now. I like them a little larger since I make them to donate to the homeless, I'm sure they will fit anyone who gets them.

Hi Dot,

I made this hat tonight using an "N" hook and one ball of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick 'N Chunky. It came out beautifully but a little big. But it's for a friend serving in Iraq so I think it'll fit him just right.

This is such an easy hat to make I think I'll make about a dozen more!

Hi Risa, glad you found my site. Well, you will end up with a doll sized hat if you use the I hook, and judging from you comment, you don't want any more doll caps. lol. The reason for 2 strands and the huge hook is to give the hat a lot of stretchiness and a hat that fits most heads. Good luck. Happy holidays.

Hi Dot! i found your site bu accident lol i'm pretty new to crochet actually i'm not that new but i'm new to the fact that what i'm crochet-ing now is correct as opposed to my home ec classes in grade school where every intended doily turned out to be a barbie doll cap :) anyway, i'm trying to do this hat with an I hook.. would that work?? i'm kinda busy at the moment so i haven't had time to go out and get an M or N hook... i know this post is pretty late. but thanks anyway.

Hi Sandy, thank you, I'm glad you like my patterns. The cotton wouldn't be stretchy like the yarn. The stretchyness is what I like about this pattern for charity. It's pretty much a one size fits all, even kids. You could try the cotton, though, and let me know how it turns out. The pattern is very quick to do.

Hi Yarnelf, I'm so glad you found my site. I don't know where to find a metal M hook. The one I have is the crystalite. I have a metal N hook that I think is made by Boye. If you have an N hook, just use that. It works fine for this hat, in fact, I like size N better for this hat than the M. I saw the plastic crystalite hooks sold individually at A. C. Moore this week when I was there. Hope this helps.

Hi!

I'm really new to this site and I'm excited about finding it.

HELP! I can't find a M hook. The only one I can find is in a pack of Crystalites, but I personally prefer the metal hooks. I've looked high and low for an M hook. . .even on the net. Any suggestion where I might find a metal M hook or 9? I want to get started using my leftover yarn to make your UBW hats for the homeless.

BTW, I'm in awe of all your cute hat patterns.

Hi there! What kind of yarn is WW? Thanks!
Dot
March 8, 2005   04:12 PM PST

Hi Judy, this hat only increases on round 2 and round 3, after that it is worked stitch for stitch. If you are using the M hook and 2 strands of ww yarn (I used red heart super saver) it will fit anyone from a 10 year old to an adult man. If you want it to be a little larger, simple continue adding rounds, if you want it to be a little smaller, do less rounds. This hat is very stretchy. I didn't realize I left off the hat size. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Hi Dot, I'm into the 6th row of your ugly but warm hat. I am using two strands of wwyarn, the right hook and wondering if it will be big enough as you didn't increase on the pattern like the puff stitch pattern I recently finished. Will it stretch or who does it fit? Thank you for your input. Judy

Thank you for your answer. What is a M size excatly? I'm a beginner and I'm from Canada so our size of hook work by number ex: 4.5, 5.5 , 6, 8... Do you know wich size would correspoond as a M size?

Thanks for your help i really appreciate it!

February 20, 2005   08:21 PM PST

Thank you, Sophie. I used a size M hook that I got it in a set of Crystalites hooks. I think Susan Bates and Lion Brands put these hooks out. I don't know if they can be purchased individually or not. I did not twist the 2 strands of yarn together. I just held them together and crocheted like normal.
Sophie

I think your hat is really beautiful! I'd like to know what size of hook you used to do it? And when you say that you used two starnds do you twisted them together or no?

Thank you!

Thank you, Cassi. You're right. I named the hat UBW because I was/am down to drab and dull yarns in my stash and I thought the hat would be ugly. I was very pleasantly surprised. I liked the name so I left it. I'm glad you found my site and I hope you enjoy the patterns.

Hi Jo, thank you, I'm sure glad you found my site. Sorry about your carpal tunnel problems, but I'm glad you had the surgery and hopefully they're all better now. I've had a little experience with arthritis, too, but not to bad yet. It's good to hear you have continued to crochet. I don't know what I'll do if I have to give it up all together. It was pretty hard just slowing down for a week or 2. I hope you won't be a stranger.

Found you site through another and it is supreme! Love the patterns I have checked out. Have had carpal tunnel in both wrists but surgery "cured" it. Have arthritis too, but that never goes away. It did slow me down once or twice but last several years have crocheted a lot and will keep on going until the hands/fingers are too stiff. Love to do it. Take care.
