I love this pattern for the reason that I have little pigment left in my skin (vitiligo) and as you can guess very sensitive to the sun. I am expanding my hat wardrobe for more "hip" and fun styles. This pattern is perfect to let my creative juices flow. I will use one of the puchased hat sewing patterns that I have closet to this design to determine the size of each piece. Got to go and order some hemp yarn!

just another thought, someone said you needed the "printer"option. The way I get around that is by highlighting the part i want to copy, select "copy" then i open up MS windows Word and paste the copied pattern on a blank document page and i get just the part i need. the you can close windows & not save and you have your printed pattern but haven't cluttered up your computer w/lots of saved pages. Just thought I'd give my two cents worth. thanks bjs

just wanted to know if you ever heard back from the lady who was thinking of making this in the R/H Plush yarn. i'm like you, way to soft. i've made scarves in that yarn and it's fabulous for a soft drapey scarf but not for a stiff hat brim, too drapey. the reason i'm writing is a person named 'Sarah' had a ? about a thinner yarn and you sent her a "url to a circumference calculator" to decide the head size etc. could you please send me that item. I need it to determine the size of the yarn and the pattern finished size. thanks a million. i've been looking for a pattern like this for ages. bjs

I'm making this hat in a slightly thinner yarn than supersaver, so I was wondering-what should the diameter of the top of the hat be? I might need to add an extra increase row or two up there and I don't want to wait until the hat's done to find that out! Coolest crochet hat ever, btw.
Hi Sarah, glad you like this hat. My daughter in law fell in love with it as soon as she saw it. I'm attaching the url to a circumference calculater I use. Measure your head and then enter that in the circumference block. That should give you the diameter you need. Good luck with the hat. Hope you'll let me know how it turns out.

Hi Lynne. your hats sound so pretty. I'd really like to see pictures of your hats if you have any. I love sharing my patterns with you and hearing about how the pattern worked out. Happy holidays and happy hookin'!

Hi...i have made 3 of these hats to give as gifts..all 3 look different as i used different color yarn in each one and on one i didn't change the color but made a "hatband" of boa type yarn . They are so fast to make and turn out so neat. thank you again for sharing your patterns with us..

Hi Lynne, I'm glad you like the hat. My daughter in law snatched it up as soon as she saw it. She likes everything I make but this was the only thing that she said was made for her. Have fun with it. Happy holidays.

Hi Beth. Your hat sounds gorgeous! I'd love to see it. That's so funny about your family wanting this hat. This is the only hat that anyone in my family ever wanted. My DIL snatched it up as soon as she saw it! lol
 | | | Beth August 4, 2005 08:51 AM PDT
Dot, I adore your hat pattern! I just made it in amethyst with a dark sort of fall-colored rainbow band for the varigated part, and it turned out gorgeous! Now my whole family wants one. :-) And they don't even wear hats!
 | | | Dot August 3, 2005 06:25 PM PDT
Thanks Karen, I'm glad you like my patterns. I've never worked with Red Heart Plush, so I don't know how it feels. Your brim won't hold up if your yarn is too soft, but that might be a cute look, too. I'd love to hear how it turns out. Good luck.
 | | | Karen August 3, 2005 03:07 PM PDT
You are awesome and talented Thanks for sharing I am going to try the Eastwardly hat in black plush by red heart see how it goes
 | | | Dot March 23, 2005 07:30 PM PST
That would be nice, Vicki, but I don't know how to do that! If you highlight the pattern, then click on file, print, and choose print selected, you will only get the what you highlighted. Sorry for the inconvenience. I crochet better than I compute.

Hi Dot, Thank you so much for the explaination of reverse SC.
I will go to the tutorial.
You are a sweet lady thanks again. Margie.
 | | | Dot January 26, 2005 11:44 AM PST
Hi Margie. Reverse single crochet is also called the crab stitch. It is single crochet going backwards, back the opposite way of the row you just completed. It is a very awkward stitch to begin with, but it gets easier to do as you us it. Here's a link to a site that has a tutorial with pictures to show you how to do it. http://www.crochetcabana.com/stitches/ltc-stitches-reverse_sc.htm
Hope this helps. | |
 | | | Margie January 26, 2005 10:50 AM PST
Hi, What is a reverse SC?
Thank you. | |
 | | | Dot January 26, 2005 09:42 AM PST
Hi Denelle. Thank you for telling me about my row count. You'd think I would have learned to count by now. lol This hat fits my 22" head. The band will stretch a little, but I'm not sure how much. Now, about the brim, making it a little broader would probably be ok as long as you're using a somewhat stiff yarn (Red Heart Super Saver is what I used). I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of your finished hat.
 | | | Denelle January 25, 2005 11:24 PM PST
Exactly what I've been wanting! Thanks for sharing your creations, Dot! Small observation: the last round should be listed as round 27, shouldn't it? Do you know what the head circumference measurement is for this? Is the band part a little stretchy? Or, how would I adapt it to my bigger head?! Also, what do you think would happen with making the brim a little broader? Would it droop with the added weight? I'm very intrigued and hope to make this by next summer. I'll send a pic if/when I do! (Dhira@aol.com)

What a great hat! I've been looking for the perfect pattern to make a red hat for my Red Hat Society formal picture...and you did it! Can't you see this in red with either purple feathers or a huge purple flower plopped on top? LOL

Hi Marvie. Thank you, I was trying or a "Unisex" look. I can't wait to see a picture of your hat when you finish it.
 | | | Dot January 18, 2005 06:18 AM PST
Hi Rebecca. Thank you. Hmmm, cowboy hat? What makes a cowboy hat? I'll have to give this some thought. In the meantime, could you just pull this one down a little on the head and curve up the brim on the sides? That might work.
 | | | Vims January 18, 2005 05:15 AM PST
oh Dot I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this one!! I am going to have to stop my ripple along and make this first !!
Thanks so much! | |

Oh, now see I adore that hat. Manly, yes... but also very cute for a woman! Yep, I'm gonna have to have me one of those *g*

Dot, that's great!! But it makes me wonder....do you think you could come up with a cowboy hat??? My brothers might actually wear something I made if I could make a cowboy hat!! lol
