HASCARF

HASCARF
(hat/scarf)
copyright © 01/22/05 Dot Matthews
hascarfhascarf
Size: Adult hat 21" to 23", hat portion measures 10 1/2" from crown to edge; scarf portion measures 6" by 42" from the bottom of the scarf to the crown of the hat.

Materials: M hook, Red Heart Super Saver yarn, approximately 8 oz

Pattern is worked holding 2 strands of yarn together

Gauge – 4 dc = 2" and 2 rows = 2"

Abbreviations used:
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
ea – each
sl st – slip stitch

Note 1: ch 2 does not count as a stitch
Note 2: when joining rounds, skip over the beginning chain and join in the first "real" stitch.
Note 3: for a longer scarf, keep working in rows until scarf is as long as you want.

ROW 1: ch 14, dc in 3rd ch from hook and in ea ch to end. (12 dc) ch 2, turn

ROW 2 thru 40: dc in ea st across. ch 2, turn at the end of ea row. (12 dc)

The next row is worked as a round as follows: crochet in the back loops all the way across. When you get to the end, do not turn, skip the beginning ch 2, then, continue on the same round by crocheting in the front loops of the same row.

ROW 41: ch 2, work in back loop only, dc in ea st across. Do not turn at end of row, skip ch 2, dc in front loops of ea stitch around. Join with a sl st in first dc. Ch 2, turn(24 dc)

ROW 42: *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in first dc. (36 dc) Do not turn at the end of the row.

ROW 43 thru 51: ch 2, dc in ea st around. Join with sl st in first dc. (36 dc) Do not turn at the end of the rows.

ROW 52: ch 1, sc in ea st around. Join with sl st in first sc. (36 sc)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Thanks for this pattern! I was looking for a hat/scarf combo that I really liked for my daughter and this worked great! I just changed the hook to a smaller one so that it would fit a child's head. I can't believe how quickly it went together :)

Hi Brenda. This is 1 item, a scarf that ends with a hat. You make the scarf part first and then starting with row 41 you begin the process of making the hat. I think if you can follow the instructions one step at a time, you will see how it is done.

I'm sorry to say, I don't have any cardigans right now. I'm still trying to learn how to make them.

Hope you enjoy the pattern.

Hello Dot, I am a beginner to crochet. This pattern would be perfect for the harsh winter her in Norway.
The instruction is only for the scarf, right? How do I crochet the hat? Are the 2 items crochet joinly?
Please advise.
..... do you have any simply cardigan patterns? hugs frm Brenda

Hi Carol, I'm glad you were able to adjust the hascarf to your needs. Thanks for the information on the smaller hook size and longer beginning chain, that's good to know. I think this would make great christmas gifts. Certainly would be a unique gift.

Thanks for the hatscarf pattern...I live in Manitoba too and this is great for winter! I didn't have the size hook that you used so used size 7mm instead and did a starting chain of 18...worked out fine! I might make a couple of these for X-mas gifts!

Hi Dot--I just finished a hascarf for myself and it was easy! But I didn't have enough worsted on hand. Instead I used one strand of Red Heart Bright and Lofty. It turned out super!!

Thank you, Sandy. That rug was a fun project and it was made with scraps of 4 ply yarn tied together. I just made an extremely long I-cord using the knitting knobby. The yarn pieces I used were probably 3 inches to several yards of a color. As I ran out of one color, I just tied on another and just kept going. The knots and tails are easily hidden in the center of the I-cord so there was not weaving in of ends.
