SOMETHING FOR HIM

RIBBED SKI HAT
copyright 01/30/05 Dot Matthews

ribbed ski hatribbed ski hat

size: Adult 22" to 24"
Hat measures 14" from top of head to bottom of neck ribbing

MATERIALS USED:
K Hook
Red Heart Supersaver, ww 4 ply, approximately 5 oz camouflage
blunt needle

gauge: 7 rows = 2", 6 sts = 2"

Abbreviations:

ea - each
st - stitch
sl st - slip stitch

NOTE: do not join rounds, place a marker in the first stitch to count rounds. Move the marker up at the end of each round.

NOTE: number in ( ) at end of rounds is not an instruction, it is stating the number of stitches for the round.

NOTE: ch-32 space refers to the space made in the previous row by chaining 32 and skipping 32 stitches.

NOTE: sc over the ch-32 space means to crochet around the chain and not into the individual stitches of the chain.

ROUND 1: ch 2, 12 sc in first ch. do not join round. (12 sc)

ROUND 2: 2 sc in ea st around. (24 sc)

ROUND 3: 1 sc in ea st around (24 sc)

ROUND 4: *1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. (36 sc)

ROUND 9: 1 sc in ea st around. (60 sc)

ROUND 10: *1 sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. (72 sc)

ROUND 11 thru 20: 1 sc in ea st around. (72 sc)

ROUND 22: sc in next 20 sts, 32 sc over the ch-32 space, sc in next 20 sts. (72 sc)

ROUND 23 thru 28: 1 sc in ea st around. (72 sc) Do not break off at the end of round 28.

For a longer hat, add more rounds before the ribbing, for a shorter hat, do fewer rounds before the ribbing.

NECK RIBBING

NOTE: neck ribbing is worked in rows in back loops only.

NOTE: for longer neck ribbing, make the beginning chain longer.

NOTE: mark the last stitch of row 3 so you can find the stitch placement of the first stich of row 2.

ROW 1: ch 16, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 14 ch across. sl st in base of ch 16, sl st in next st. Turn, DO NOT CH 1. (15 sc)

ROW 2: working in back loops only, sc in next 15 sts, ch 1, turn. (15 sc)

ROW 3: working in back loops only, sc in next 15 sts, sl st in next 2 sts of last round of hat body. Turn, DO NOT CH 1. (15 sc)

Repeat rows 2 and 3 around last row of hat body.

At the end of last row of ribbing, and working thru back loops and opposite side of foundation ch, sl st in next 15 sts to close the seam.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Hello Dot

I just love your website. I spend a lot of time looking at every crochet pattern. I am fairly new at this and the biggest problem I have is changing colours in a pattern. Do you have way of saying it easy and with a drawing so I can figure it out?

I was half way done with the ribbing for the Ribbed Ski Hat. It just did not look right to me.
The way I had it the hat would come down over the head with NO face opening. When I was half way done with the ribbing the ch 32 was way inside the hat with no obvious way to use the chain. Would appreciate clear directions on how the face opening is suppose to be worked. A drawing would be better.

I'm about halfway finished working the ribbed neck around the body of the ski cap.
I just hope it ends up looking like the ski cap in the picture.

You're welcome, Helen. You shouldn't be too loose with your stitches, the pattern makes a pretty large hat and it will stretch some when he wears it.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. My husband is so sweet and is wearing this while he works outside in the cold but I hope to do another on with the suggestions you provided. I was loose with my stitches because he has a large head.
God Bless

After finishing my hat, I think I like the way I finished the face.

First, I did the neck ribbing in a hook two sizes smaller (and ch 21) to bring it in a bit then used the same hook to do a two-sc ribbing around the entire face to bring it in some-it seemed to work.

In answer to the face stretching, work the 32 sc into the chs instead of around the ch and then when you're through, try working a round or two of sc all around the face, bringing it in if necessary, if it's too big.

This is what I'm going to do when I get to the face, I'm making one for a male gift for a party gift exchange.

To the one who's already finished-try doing a round or two of sc around the face, that should bring it in.

I noticed the question Helen had about the face part stretching out & not staying up. I am about to make this for my husband & wanted to know what your suggestion was.
Thanks.

I hope you can help me Dot. I just made this hat from my DH and it looks great except on thing, it stretches and when it does, it won't stay up around his mouth and nose. I tried washing and drying and guess what? IT STRETCHED EVEN MORE. Since I am new to crocheting, I am at a loss. Is there anything I can do to make it tighter around the mouth area NOW?

Btw, my 9yr. said that if I was trying to make a "ninja" mask it should be black. So, of course you know what my next project is, and probably gold for our knight costumes.

Hi Torrie, thank you, I'm glad you like my patterns. I'm sorry your Eastwoodly poncho turned out too small, but you could use the pattern as a guide and make it larger if you want to. All you really need to do is make a large rectangle and when you get to the halfway point, make a chain in the middle of the row long enough to get a head through and then continue with the other half of the rectangle. Good luck with your hat. Happy holidays and happy hookin'!

I'm making this now for DH.

Before he left for work this morning he commented that he wished he had a ski cap (he works outside and it's very frosty out today) I went looking through CPC and found this and thought it would be perfect.

I'm using a slightly smaller hook as his head is a bit smaller than mine.

Hi Torrie. Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying this pattern. You can make it larger by doing more increase rounds. Try doing round 11 like this...repeat round 10 but where it says 4 stitches, do 5. You could also go up a hook size. I don't think I would do both though. Good luck with it. Let me know how it turns out.

I love the pattern and so does everyone that has seen it done. I have one question I need to make it about two sizes larger for my husband. He has a large head about a 7 1/2 cowboy hat size, and I don't know how to do this since I am very new to crocheting. How can I make it bigger and keep it's shape?

You're welcome, Sophie. In this pattern you are working in a spiral. You need to place a stitch marker in your first stitch of every round so you will know where the round ends. Move the marker up each round. Since I don't know what a "concentric circle" is, I'm not sure if we're making that or not. lol
sophie
November 27, 2005   03:53 PM PST

thanx for the pattern! i'm a beginner, though, and i have a question:

what soes it mean NOT to join the rounds? does it mean we are doing a spiral? or does it mean we will sew it up in the end? are we doing concentric circles?

Hi Julie, I sent you an email, explaining in a little more detail. The purpose of the chain 32 and skipping the 32 single crochets is to leave an opening in the front of the mask for your face. Email me again if you have any more questions. Good luck on finishing your project.

I am fairly new to crocheting, but I have made several hats and other items successfully. But this is the first hat pattern that really stumps me. I don't understand round 22. I think I understand round 21, but when I get to round 22, I am lost. I first sc in the ch 32 and then remembered the note about sc in the space, so I went back and sc in the skipped 32 sc from the previous row. And I just can't make heads or tails with where I am going from there and I can't guess from just looking at the picture. What was the point of chaining 32 then skipping the next 32 sc? What does the ch 32 end up being for? Please help, so I can move forward and get some sleep because I can't rest until I have finished this pattern. Thanks

Hi Christine, yes, this has a picture too. If it's not showing, place your pointer over the area the picture should be (or in the box with the red x if there is one) and right click, then choose "show picture" and that should force the picture to show. If that doesn't work, try a refresh.

When I first saw this pattern, I knew I had to make it because Hubby already asked me to make a mask for hunting... I was trying to come up with my own pattern for it... Then you posted this pattern! :D So after that all I did was following yours, and I made it for him for Valentine's Day. He absolutely loved it!!! THANK YOU. :)

Hi Elise, I'd use a smaller hook and stop increasing at row 7 or row 9, then follow the pattern. You have the advantage of having your boys right there so you can measure them. When you have the hat big enough to reach the eyebrows, try it on then mark a stitch on either side near the ear, that's how long the chain needs to be for the face opening.
