I heard that Dot has died, is this true? God I pray it isn't. I heard it on a crochet group that I am on.

Hello Dot
I just love your website. I spend a lot of time looking at every crochet pattern. I am fairly new at this and the biggest problem I have is changing colours in a pattern. Do you have way of saying it easy and with a drawing so I can figure it out?
 | | | Kathy January 17, 2007 01:21 PM PST
I was half way done with the ribbing for the Ribbed Ski Hat. It just did not look right to me.
The way I had it the hat would come down over the head with NO face opening. When I was half way done with the ribbing the ch 32 was way inside the hat with no obvious way to use the chain. Would appreciate clear directions on how the face opening is suppose to be worked. A drawing would be better.

I'm about halfway finished working the ribbed neck around the body of the ski cap.
I just hope it ends up looking like the ski cap in the picture.

You're welcome, Helen. You shouldn't be too loose with your stitches, the pattern makes a pretty large hat and it will stretch some when he wears it.

There's the link to mine if you want to get a look at it.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. My husband is so sweet and is wearing this while he works outside in the cold but I hope to do another on with the suggestions you provided. I was loose with my stitches because he has a large head.
God Bless

After finishing my hat, I think I like the way I finished the face.
First, I did the neck ribbing in a hook two sizes smaller (and ch 21) to bring it in a bit then used the same hook to do a two-sc ribbing around the entire face to bring it in some-it seemed to work.
 | | | Julie December 4, 2006 05:13 PM PST
In answer to the face stretching, work the 32 sc into the chs instead of around the ch and then when you're through, try working a round or two of sc all around the face, bringing it in if necessary, if it's too big.
This is what I'm going to do when I get to the face, I'm making one for a male gift for a party gift exchange.
To the one who's already finished-try doing a round or two of sc around the face, that should bring it in.

I noticed the question Helen had about the face part stretching out & not staying up. I am about to make this for my husband & wanted to know what your suggestion was.
Thanks. | |

I hope you can help me Dot. I just made this hat from my DH and it looks great except on thing, it stretches and when it does, it won't stay up around his mouth and nose. I tried washing and drying and guess what? IT STRETCHED EVEN MORE. Since I am new to crocheting, I am at a loss. Is there anything I can do to make it tighter around the mouth area NOW?

Hi Dot..Do you have an easy basic pattern for face cloths, dish cloths or hand towels?

Dear Dot, Have just finished my first ribbed ski hat and it came out beautifully. How would I adjust to fit a child. Thank you!
 | | | Mitzi June 20, 2006 12:00 PM PDT
Btw, my 9yr. said that if I was trying to make a "ninja" mask it should be black. So, of course you know what my next project is, and probably gold for our knight costumes.

Dot, do you have a basic beanie hat for a boy of about 7 yrs? I can't find a simple style, a bit like the one's David Beckham wears LOL

I just love your site! It crops up in so many discussions and groups, I think you probably have one of the most talked about blogs.
Great site and awesome designs, x

Hi Torrie, thank you, I'm glad you like my patterns. I'm sorry your Eastwoodly poncho turned out too small, but you could use the pattern as a guide and make it larger if you want to. All you really need to do is make a large rectangle and when you get to the halfway point, make a chain in the middle of the row long enough to get a head through and then continue with the other half of the rectangle. Good luck with your hat. Happy holidays and happy hookin'!
 | | | Dot December 14, 2005 10:26 AM PST
Hi Julie, I know he'll love it because you made it for him. I'm glad I had somethin you could use. Happy holidays.

Hi Dot Thank you I will give that a try. I love your patterns I did that Eastwood poncho although it came out way to small for my husband it worked up quick and was easy. Thank you and Happy Holiday's I will let you know how it turns out. Torrie

I'm making this now for DH.
Before he left for work this morning he commented that he wished he had a ski cap (he works outside and it's very frosty out today) I went looking through CPC and found this and thought it would be perfect.
I'm using a slightly smaller hook as his head is a bit smaller than mine.
 | | | Dot November 30, 2005 02:21 PM PST
Hi Torrie. Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying this pattern. You can make it larger by doing more increase rounds. Try doing round 11 like this...repeat round 10 but where it says 4 stitches, do 5. You could also go up a hook size. I don't think I would do both though. Good luck with it. Let me know how it turns out.
 | | | Torrie November 30, 2005 12:13 PM PST
I love the pattern and so does everyone that has seen it done. I have one question I need to make it about two sizes larger for my husband. He has a large head about a 7 1/2 cowboy hat size, and I don't know how to do this since I am very new to crocheting. How can I make it bigger and keep it's shape?
 | | | Dot November 28, 2005 10:43 AM PST
Yay, Sophie! Thank you, glad you like the site.
 | | | sophie November 27, 2005 09:30 PM PST
now i get it! what a wonderful site.
 | | | Dot November 27, 2005 04:17 PM PST
You're welcome, Sophie. In this pattern you are working in a spiral. You need to place a stitch marker in your first stitch of every round so you will know where the round ends. Move the marker up each round. Since I don't know what a "concentric circle" is, I'm not sure if we're making that or not. lol
 | | | sophie November 27, 2005 03:53 PM PST
thanx for the pattern! i'm a beginner, though, and i have a question:
what soes it mean NOT to join the rounds? does it mean we are doing a spiral? or does it mean we will sew it up in the end? are we doing concentric circles?
 | | | Dot September 23, 2005 09:34 AM PDT
Hi Julie, I sent you an email, explaining in a little more detail. The purpose of the chain 32 and skipping the 32 single crochets is to leave an opening in the front of the mask for your face. Email me again if you have any more questions. Good luck on finishing your project.

I am fairly new to crocheting, but I have made several hats and other items successfully. But this is the first hat pattern that really stumps me. I don't understand round 22. I think I understand round 21, but when I get to round 22, I am lost. I first sc in the ch 32 and then remembered the note about sc in the space, so I went back and sc in the skipped 32 sc from the previous row. And I just can't make heads or tails with where I am going from there and I can't guess from just looking at the picture. What was the point of chaining 32 then skipping the next 32 sc? What does the ch 32 end up being for? Please help, so I can move forward and get some sleep because I can't rest until I have finished this pattern. Thanks

Hi Mouse. You're welcome. Have fun with the pattern.

thanks bunches for this pattern - always wanted to make one of these!
 | | | Dot July 26, 2005 07:40 AM PDT
Hi Christine, yes, this has a picture too. If it's not showing, place your pointer over the area the picture should be (or in the box with the red x if there is one) and right click, then choose "show picture" and that should force the picture to show. If that doesn't work, try a refresh.
 | | | christine July 26, 2005 02:19 AM PDT
does this have a picture? i see all the others but this one.
thanks | |
 | | | Dot March 15, 2005 02:46 PM PST
Thank you Chie, glad your husband liked it. I'm sorry it took me so long to reply, this post somehow got misplaced. I'm much better at crocheting than I am at blogging.

When I first saw this pattern, I knew I had to make it because Hubby already asked me to make a mask for hunting... I was trying to come up with my own pattern for it... Then you posted this pattern! :D So after that all I did was following yours, and I made it for him for Valentine's Day. He absolutely loved it!!! THANK YOU. :)

Thanks, Dot! I'll give it a try & send you a pic of the results!
 | | | Dot January 31, 2005 11:26 PM PST
Hi Elise, I'd use a smaller hook and stop increasing at row 7 or row 9, then follow the pattern. You have the advantage of having your boys right there so you can measure them. When you have the hat big enough to reach the eyebrows, try it on then mark a stitch on either side near the ear, that's how long the chain needs to be for the face opening.
 | | | elise January 31, 2005 09:02 PM PST
Hi Dot, I have 2 boys who are never very interested in my creations, but this is perfect for them! How would you adjust it for smaller heads? Thanks!
 | | | Dot January 31, 2005 06:52 PM PST
Thanks, Natalie. I know that made you feel good. Hearing that tells me the hat is a hit. Thanks for letting me know.
 | | | Natalie January 31, 2005 03:42 PM PST
Another fabulous creation, Dot!! My hunny has already requested one for hunting next season!! (this is the first piece of apparel he's asked for/actually would wear!) Yay for you!!
