MATERIALS:
I hook
Approximately 8 oz. Red Heart Super Saver ww yarn, color, Red or color of choice
Scissors
Yarn Needle

GAUGE: 6 rows=2" and 6 scs=2"

ABBREVIATIONS USED:
ch = chain
cbs = crossed bar stitch
sc = single crochet
scs = single crochets
ea = each
st = stitch
sts = stitches
sl st = slip stitch
sp = space
yo = yarn over
hdc = half double crochet = yarn over hook,  insert hook in designated stitch, yarn over hook and pull yarn through stitch (3 loops on hook), yarn over hook and pull yarn through all 3 loops on hook.

SPECIAL STITCHES:
cbs = crossed bar stitch = Crossed Bar Stitch - yo, insert hook in st or sp indicated, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo insert hook in next st or sp indicated, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yo draw thru all 5 loops on hook - crossed bar stitch made.

Reverse hdc = reverse half double crochet = yarn over hook,  insert hook in stitch to the right of the hook, yarn over hook and pull yarn through stitch (3 loops on hook), yarn over hook and pull yarn through all 3 loops on hook.

NOTE 1: Numbers in ( ) at the end of the rows is not a part of the instructions, it is simply stating the number of stitches you have at the end of that row.

NOTE 2: Do not join rounds unless instructed to do so. Place a marker in the first stitch of each round for round count. Move the marker up each round.

NOTE 3: Chain 2 at beginning of rounds 14 thru 17 does not count as a stitch, it's for height only.

PATTERN WORKED HOLDING 2 STRANDS TOGETHER.

ROUND 1: ch 2, 8 sc in first ch. do not join (8 sc)

ROUND 2: 2 sc in ea st around. (16 sc) place a marker in first st for row count. Move marker up in ea round.

ROUND 3: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. (24 sc)

ROUND 4: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (32 sc)

ROUND 5: *1 sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. (40 sc)

ROUND 6: * 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 4 sts. Repeat from * around. (48 sc)

ROUND 7: 1 sc in ea st around. (48 sc)

ROUND 8:  * 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 5 sts. Repeat from * around. (56 sc)

ROUND 9: *1 sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next. Repeat from * around. (64 sc)

ROUND 10:  *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 7 sts, Repeat from * around. (72 sc).

Piece measures 7 1/2" across from edge to edge, and 23 3/4" around at end of round 10. Do fewer increase rows for a smaller hat.

WORK IN BACK LOOPS FOR ROUND 11 ONLY

ROUND 11: sl st in next st, place marker in sl st, sc in back loop only of ea st around. End with sc in back loop of the sl st. Do Not Join. (72 sc)

ROUND 12 thru 13: Work in both loops. 1 sc in ea st around. Join with sl st in first sc. (72 sc)

cbs = crossed bar stitch = Crossed Bar Stitch - yo, insert hook in st or sp indicated, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo insert hook in next st or sp indicated, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yo draw thru all 5 loops on hook - crossed bar stitch made.

ROUND 14: ch 2, *cbs, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join in the first ch-1 space of the round. (36 cbs)

[Start  the first cbs in the same st as the join. The next cbs always starts in the same stitch (or space) where the previous cbs ended.The final cbs of the round ends in the same stitch as the first cbs of the round.]

ROUNDS 15 thru 17 are worked in ch-1 spaces of previous rounds.

ROUND 15 thru 17: ch 2, *cbs, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join in first ch-1 space of round for rounds 15 and 16. Join in the top of the first cbs for round 17. (36 cbs)

Tip: when you come to the stitch with the chain 2, place your hook between the chain 2 and the first cbs stitch, then complete the stitch you're working on. This will hide the chain 2.

ROUND 18: ch 1, sc in same space as join, *1 sc in next st, 1 sc in next sp. Repeat from * around. Do Not Join. Place marker in first stitch for row count.

ROUND 19: 1 sc in ea st around.

ROUND 20: WORK IN FRONT LOOPS ONLY FOR THIS ROUND. * 1 sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. (84 sc)

ROUND 21: 1 sc in ea st around. (84 sc)

ROUND 22: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 6 sts. Repeat from * around. (96 sc)

ROUND 23: 1 sc in ea st around. (96)

ROUND 24: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 7 sts. Repeat from * around. (108 sc)

ROUND 25: 1 sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, *1 sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. End with 1 sc in next 4 sts. (120 sc). sl st in next st.

ROUND 26: ch 2, 1 reverse hdc in ea st around. (120 reverse hdc)

Reverse hdc = yo, insert hook in next st to the right, yo, pull up a loop, (3 loops on hook) yo, pull thru all 3 loops.
Tip: Reverse hdc is very awkward, but it gets easier as you do it.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Embelish with the White Twinkle Choker. Just make the straps long enough to tie in the back and hang down.

HI Dot! GREAT pattern, worked up nicely in single strand of yarn too. I made one of your other hats for me with purple fun fur on the last 4 rounds. This hat was made in pink, and for the strap around the middle it's in variegated purple/pink fun fur. My friend and I are both in the Red Hat Society - therefore the color choices. Can't wait to show them off!

Hi Dee!

Thanks for your great site, and for sharing your free patterns, news, and all important "how tos' for us newbies.

I seem to have it in mind to do a hat I've seen no pattern for. I know it would
only take common sense for an expert,
but I'm stuck! Any quick ideas much appreciated. I have a couple of ideas
that would probably work from the same idea. Basically, it would be LIKE
an old fashioned mens' TOP HAT.
With a large, flat top. Sides tapering
to a small brim.
SOUNDS easy, but I've frogged until
I can't stand the thought of those little
green guys anymore! I was also thinking the same sort of pattern without stiffening, and looser sides would be a cool "scrunchie" I have
a big head..and would want both to be looose. Sorry this is SO LONG.but
I will appreciate it SOO much if you
can even POINT me in the right direction! I know it would be a walk
in the park for YOU, as I only have simple stitches in mind.

Thank you again..for everything you do!

Hi Sharon, I haven't made this one in raffia, but I've used raffia to make another one I designed.

Hi, Just wondering if you have ever made this using raffia? I am looking for a crochet cowgirl hat pattern made in raffia...saw them at a craft show....very nice, but could not afford, so would like to make my own. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The brim was turned up...kind of rolled on each side. Thanks!

Hi Rebecca. I really don't know, but you might try doing fewer increase rounds. Since the hat is worked holding 2 strands together, I don't think using a smaller hook is possible. This hat may not hold it's shape like a real cowboy hat, it's brim tends to fall. Good luck and happy hookin.

Hello Dot! I'm wondering if you know how I could modify this hat to fit a 7 year old? My oldest is taking horseback riding lessons and I'd love to make this in a nice warm wool for her to wear this winter while she's riding.

I'm glad you like it, Elizabeth. Funny!? I was trying for outrageous! lol Now, about your stitches. You will end round 13 with 72 single crochets. Each CBS takes 2 single crochets to make so you should end up with 36 cbs at the end of round 14. Count the cbs at the top of the stitch and not the legs of the stitch. If it looks right then you're probably doing it right, but not counting it right. Hope this helps. Good luck with the hat. I hope you get a lot of laughs, I mean compliments, when you finish it.

Ah, I love this hat! It is so funny and cute! My family all gave me weird looks when I took out my bright blue yarn and told them I was making a cowboy hat... oh well.
I have a question, though, Dot. If I start my first cbs in the join, then the next one in the last st of the first, won't I have 72 cbs and not 36? I finished round 14 with 72, and it looks right, but... I think I'm doing it wrong. Can you help?

Hi Lam, Welcome to the wonderful world of crochet. Way to go on quitting smoking, I know how hard that is to do. Sorry to hear about your back problems. Congratulations on your great, great nephew, I hope his health continues to be good.

This hat is pretty large and I'm not sure how to make it small enough to fit your nephew. In order for the hat to hold it's shape it needs to be kind of stiff, so I'm afraid it may not work well for a newborn, especially one as delicate as your nephew. Maybe you could try using baby weight yarn and a very small hook and see if that works. I don't know how to make different sizes in my patterns. Sorry I can't be any more help.

Hello, I am new to crochet. I am a 6'2" 250lb. texas man. I am learning this craft to keep my hands busy. I am disabled because of back problems and recently quit smoking cigarettes. I have a great,great nephew that was born 3 months early. I have made the annies attic cowboy boots, 3 diff. pair and would like to crochet him a cowboy hat. Owen's head is 10.5 inches in circumference. I hope someone can help this old cowboy send his little pardner in New York a hat to match is boots. Yes he his coming right along with his health. Thanks, LAM.

You're welcome, Roo. It's my pleasure to share my patterns with you. I'm glad you were able to finish it so quickly. I love your idea of a different color for the CBS section. I'd love to see pictures if you have any. Great tip on the reverse hdc. I'll have to give that a try sometime.

Thanks for sharing all your great patterns! I just made the Giddyup Go hat this morning. It worked up quickly. I did have to frog round 14 because I didn't know I was supposed to skip a stitch in between steps of the CBS. I found an easy way to do the reverse hdc was to turn the work so the wrong side was facing me and make the hdc as usual, with the exception of entering the stitch from the back instead of from the front. It looked the same as doing it the other way, but it was a lot easier. I think the next hat I make with this pattern will have a second color in the CBS section. Thanks again!

Sounds like you're doing great for someone who's just recently taken up crocheting. I never did anything but afghans for years when I first learned. Your idea of using 2 different colors sounds very interesting. I'd love to hear how it turns out. You got me on the knitting, I can do the stitches but I have never followed a pattern or made anything with knit.
Angela

oh yea and im gonna try two different colored yarns at once...its gonna look purty!
Angela
March 29, 2005   08:21 PM PST

yea it's real floppy. It's ok tho it looks like I got it off of gilligian lol. I like it. Looks nothing like the cowboy hat but it is still cool. I am starting another cowboy hat now. The hdc reverse still gets me but i think i am still either wrapping yarn around the wrong way or inserting the hook into the wrong side of the next loop. I will look up directions for single reverse and see how to insert and wrap yarn. Thanks for this pattern! I live in Texas and have been wanting to make my own cowboy hat! If only you could make up knit patterns :D My other passion. I'm 18 by the way! And been crocheting since october!
Dot
March 29, 2005   04:16 PM PST

Oh, no, Angela, that's a shame. Is it really floppy or does it have some body to it? Reverse hdc you should insert your hook in the next stitch to you right and then complete the stitch. It's very awkward but it gets easier as you do it.
Angela
March 29, 2005   12:59 PM PST

OMG! I'm 3/4 of the way done with the last row and I JUST noticed it says "2 strands of yarn held together"... :( Well It's still cool and I will wear it like a proud gilliganish cowgirl lol. (it's not as sturdy). Also I've noticed that when I put my hook down and pick it up again to work on the hat, it seems to me that I forget how to do the hdc reverse! I have to keep frogging the same stitch cause it doesnt look right. but maybe im not inserting it where i should be.
Dot

Hi Grace, yes, you need to hold 2 strands of yarn together and crochet them at the same time. You can use either 2 skeins of yarn, which is the easiest way to do it, or you can work 1 skein of yarn and pull the yarn from the middle and also the outside end at the same time. The last way tends to tangle a little more than using 2 skeins.
grace

Hi I'm new to the crocheting community....when you say pattern is worked with 2 strands, do you mean i should have 2 bundles of yarn and i shoud be crocheting them at the same time?

OMYGOODNESS, DEE, YOU'VE DONE IT AGAIN! Here I've barely started the Eastwoodly hat and now I learn you've got created another cowboy-type hat. What a dilemma: Do I finish the one I've begun, tear it out and use the yarn for this new one, finish the first and start a second, meld the two using what I've got so far, etc., etc. Decisions, decisions....

Thank you again for your wonderful work and generosity.
