I had the hat, and without even using the last row, it was wayyyy too small. I used the right hook size and used Caron Simply Soft. I have a large head, but I tried it on someone with a small head and it was tight on them too. It seems that this hat is for a child. I will have to remake it later. I'm thinking more 2 dc rows would give it more width overall.

Just found this site need to know how to attach yarn to a cluster that is made in the heirloom 63 square...Leisure Arts pattern #17.
Are you aware of that book and can you help me? I am doing something wrong and don't have a clue.

I made this hat today using Bernat Softee Baby(two strands together with J then K hook). I love it!! I followed everything except I think I added two extra rows towards the end and left out the slip stitch row, I like the scalloped edge better. You have a great site, I can't wait to try more.

I made this hat today. It is so cute "but" it is to small for my head. The gauge was coming out but when I put all the slip stitches in the final round it won't fit on my head. When I make another one can I leave out that final round?

Hi Dot! What cute patterns you have! Do you have any patterns for Men's scarves?
Thanks | |

Hi Dot,
I'm currently working on this hat/beanie, but i'm confused on ROW 8. I'm reading it as: slip stitch in first, then chain 3, space, chain 1 ... OR slip stitch in first 3 spaces, then chain 1.... its really the "ch-3" that's throwing me off...I dont know if the dash is significant or just a typing error..

Dot, I love all your hat patterns. Thank you so much for sharing them.

I checked my gauge with a swatch for this hat and had to go down one hook size to an "I" to match your stated gauge of 7 dc to 2 inches. (A "J" only gave 5 stitches in 2 inches for me.) The hat worked up rather pretty, so it was very frustrating to discover it was WAY too small! It looks about the size for a toddler or preschooler at most. It's far too small for my elementary aged kids. And I was making it for myself, since I'm going bald and wear hats every day. Rats!

I made this hat. THough it didn't come as good as yours, it still looks beautiful. Yours is one of the best sites for lovely hat patterns.

Hi Heather, that's a tough question. I would suggest you learn what the abbreviations are and read the pattern 1 step at a time. I try to write my patterns so that when you read them you are reading one step at a time instead of all the steps at once. Annie's Attic has videos of how to do the stitches and what they are called if you need that.

ok maybe you can help me. I love to crochet I know how to do most stitches, but I have no clue as to how to read a pattern. It's like knowing how to play music but you can't read it. And I am one of those people that learns better by someone showing then reading directions. What would you suggest. I want to make some of these hats. =(

Hi Carobart. I think the problem is that I wasn't clear enough in the instructions. You really should end round 3 with 2 dc in last st of round. The ch3 at the beginning of the round will count as the "dc in next dc". See if that helps, and let me know if you still need help.

Just started the Cluster Craze Hat. Round 2 I got 24dc, but on round 3 I get 37 stitches. I have 2 dc in stitch 36 and then ending with one dc in the same place as the beg ch. Any suggestions? Help! I am counting the beg ch as one.

Hi Julie, thanks for telling me about your success with this pattern. I'm glad your friend likes it so much. I'm sure a big part of that is the fact you made it for her.
 | | | Julie February 13, 2006 04:03 PM PST
I made this hat for my friend (along with the matching scarf) and it came out so great!! I almost kept it. My friend just loves it. I made it in a very soft pink. Just beautiful. Thank you so much for the pattern - very easy to follow.

Thanks Rebecca, I'm glad you like this pattern. A lot of people end up with smaller hats than I make. I don't know why unless I crochet a lot looser than they do. I hope your next one turns out the way you want it to. I bet your girls will look adorable in their matching hats. A picture would be so great. (hint hint)
Happy holidays and happy hookin.

Dot, this is so pretty! I just finished it, went down a hook size to make it fit my 7 yr old but it fits my 3 yr old! Guess I work tightly. Now they will end up with matching hats in their stockings. Thanks for sharing your talent with us!

 | | | Becky September 14, 2005 10:44 PM PDT
Well, that's what I was doing, so I guess maybe you wrote it right the first time. I was just doubting myself. Thanks for quick response -- I'm anxious to finish it up! Lizzy is next on my list ...

Hi Becky, thanks, glad you like the hat. I guess I could have written that round a little clearer. try it this way:
sl st in first ch-3 sp, ch 1, 5 sc in same sp. * 5 sc in next ch-3 sp. Repeat from * around.
I hope that helps.

Hi Dot!
Help! I love this hat, but I just want to check on one step: In round 8, are the slip stitch and chain in every ch-3 space, or just the first one? (i.e. is it sl st, ch 1, 5sc, sl st, ch 1, 5 sc OR sl st, ch 1, 5 sc, 5 sc, 5 sc). Hope I'm making myself clear! I'm working on the hat, but I just did the sl st and ch 1 in the first space, and then only 5 sc the rest of the way around, but I'm not sure it's right. Can you clarify? Thanks -- I can't wait to finish!

Hi Julie, the patterns for the baby items I found on the internet, and unfortunately I don't have the links anymore. I believe if you check out Crochet Pattern Central, http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/, you'll find all the patterns there and more.
