SIZE: 12 months

HOOK: J (K optional for foundation chain)
YARN: Caron Simply Soft, Coconut 9601, 9 oz/251 g/500 yds,
SUPPLIES: scissors, blunt yarn needle, tape measure, stitch markers
MEASUREMENTS: Chest=20"; Shoulder to hem = 11 1/2"; Sleeves length underarm to cuff = 7 1/2"; Hood from neck to top = 8"
GAUGE: 7 sc = 2"; 7 rows = 2"
STITCHES/ABBREVIATIONS: ch = chain; sc = single crochet; dc = double crochet; sl st = slip stitch; st = stitch; sk = skip; ea = each
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: (sc, dc) = make 1 single crochet and 1 double crochet both in the stitch indicated.

INSTRUCTIONS
With J hook , ch 35

TIP: Place marker in center st of ea corner (3 sc in one stitch makes a corner). Always sc to the marker, then do 3 scs in the stitch with the marker. Move marker up ea row.

TIP: For longer sweater, repeat row 15 until sweater is as long as you want, for shorter sweater, do fewer repeats.

ROW 16 thru 30: Repeat row 15.

TIES AND EDGING

TIP: sc around the posts of the stitches when working in the ends of rows.

RIGHT FRONT:
2 sc in same st as last sc, work sc's evenly spaced up side to yoke. sc in first row of yoke,
ch 30 (for tie), sl st in 2nd ch from hook,
sl st in ea ch back down to yoke.
sc in end of rows to 2nd row from end
ch 30 (for tie), sl st in 2nd ch from hook,
sl st in ea ch back down to yoke.
3 sc in last row of yoke. (place marker in center st of 3 sc)

NECK EDGE:
1 sc in ea ch across neck edge to last ch,
3 sc in last ch (place marker in center st of 3 sc). Turn work so you can sc across the left front side

LEFT FRONT:
ch 30 (for tie), sl st in 2nd ch from hook,
sl st in ea ch back down to yoke,
work sc's evenly spaced down left side, make 2nd tie to correspond with the right side.
sc evenly spaced down to last st. Turn work so you can sc across bottom edge.

BOTTOM EDGE:
3 sc in next sc,
sc in ea st across. Join in first sc.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

SLEEVES (make 2)
sleeves are worked in rounds

First Sleeve
attach yarn in center ch at under arm.

ROUND 1: ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 2 chs, sc in next 25 sc, sc in last 2 chs. Join in first sc. (30 sc) DO NOT TURN AT END OF ROUNDS

ROUND 2: ch 1, (sc, dc) in same st as join,
* sk next sc,
(sc, dc) in next st. Repeat from * around. Join in first sc. (30 sts)

ROUND 3: ch 1, (sc, dc) in same st as join,
*sk next dc,
(sc, dc) in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join in first sc. (30 sts)

ROUND 16: ch 1, sc in same st as join,
*sk next dc, sc in next s, Repeat from * around. Join in first sc. (15 sc)

ROUND 18 thru 20: repeat round 17

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Make 2nd sleeve same as first.

HOOD

Attach yarn in corner st of right front neck edge.

ROW 1: ch 1, sc in same st, sc in ea st across. ch 1, turn. (36 sc)

ROW 2: (sc, dc) in first st,
*sk next st
(sc, dc) in next st. Repeat from * across to last 3 sts, sk next 2 sts, sc in last st. ch 1, turn. (35 sts)

ROW 3 thru 22: repeat row 2.

Fasten off at end of row 22, leaving a very long tail for sewing seam of hood.

Fold hood with right sides together, whip stitch seam across top. Weave in all ends.

	Grandma Bunnie May 26, 2009 01:08 AM PDT Hi Dot, Your patterns are the BEST I have ever worked. You think of everything. I just finished this sweater for my granddaughter...it was a breeze with your tips. (I used organic cotton yarn...soooo soft and cuddly.) You truly have a gift, it was as if you wrote the pattern just for me. I made two minor changes, instead fo whip stitching the hood together I connected it with single crochet. I also added a row of single crochet along the outer edge of the hood for a more finished look. My grandmother always taught me that the inside of a garment should look as nice as the outside. I will forward a photo once I have one. Thanks so much, I look forward to working more of you beautiful creations.

	kathy November 12, 2006 01:38 PM PST hello again. I tried emailing you but do not know it it worked. I have self stripping yarn and its bernat baby coordinates( why I bought it i do not knew LOL) and it is hard to see stitches. the sc diagonal they give I keep losing track and well waht can iIsay.. I saw the box stitch in your albums done in diagonal how do you do that. That might work in self stripping???? or do you have another pattern that might work better? all the things I ahve made from your site have come out great

	Name Bonnie June 29, 2006 04:02 AM PDT Hi. Here is how I did the ribbing for the sweater: I made a round of double crochet. The next round for the front post double crochet, I inserted the hook from the front of the row and wrapped the hook around the post of the double crochet from the right to the left and complete the stitch as you would a regular double crochet. The back post double crochet is done the same way, only you insert the hook on the back of the row on the right side of the post and wrap your hook around the post of the double crochet and complete the stitch as a regular double crochet. You do the front post over the front post, and back post over the back post on the next rounds. Hope this helps you. Bonnie jetta@madbbs.com

	NameBonnie June 4, 2006 03:20 AM PDT Hi. I have made several of these sweaters this past month. They all turned out beautifully. I use G hook for newborn, H hook for 3 month, I hook for six month, J hook for 9 month, and K hook for 12 month. I also added a ribbing on the bottom and sleeve from front post, back post pattern for five rows. I made the front to touch the other side by doing the ties on the first row of single crochet, then doing one or two more rows by stitching behind the ties, going from bottom corner, across hood front and down the other side, working behind those ties. When I do the sleeves, I single crochet in the stitch where the pattern would be worked. This automatically gathers the sleeve to 16 to eighteen stitches. Then I half double crochet around, then front post, back post for five rows. The cuffs turn out nice, and match the ribbing I do for 5 rows on the bottom. Also, I have made a size 4 sweater, by continuing with the bodice pattern, and using measurements for a size 4. I still used the K hook but with more stitches. It turned out great.

I have another started with a larger hook, but all in the special shell stitch.. no sc's. So far so good. The little girl I tried it on, wore it home. Thanks.

	Dot January 16, 2006 12:56 PM PST Hi Christy, because the sweater ties in the front, it doesn't really overlap at all. I think the modifications you want to make would work out just fine. If you wanted to seam up the front from the bottom to the breast and add buttons, you might want to make button loops instead of button holes to close it. Good luck with your project, I hope it turns out great for you.

The stitch sc,dc is so simple, but the look it creates is unusual, and very fancy looking. I used Jiffy yarn, which is a little fuzzy, but I had it on hand, and the measurements came out perfectly. It reminds me of a sweater that my best friend's grandmother made for my daughter 26 years ago - which I still have. 	jamie October 29, 2005 11:55 AM PDT I'm not a terribly experienced crocheter, either, but I have been searching for a pattern like this one and can't wait for someone else to test it out. my little girl must have this sweeater. but, since I have already made a cuddly little winter bonnet for her that I want the sweater to match, I may try doing it without the hood. this is so much cuter than most of the other baby sweater patterns I can find. I don't know why i look anywhere else. From now on, Dot, you're my first source to cheeck for any pattern I'm after. No more wasting time with lesser crocheters LOL.
