Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver Camo, 100% acrylic, 2.5oz/142yds
blunt needle

Stitches Used
chain (ch); double crochet (dc); crossed bar stitch (cbs); cluster; reverse half
double crochet (reverse hdc);

CROSSED BAR STITCH (cbs): yo, pull up a loop in designated stitch
sk next st, yo, pull up a loop in the stitch after the skipped stitch,  
yo, draw thru all 5 loops on hook,  *ch 1, yo, pull up a loop in st where previous
cbs ended, sk next st,  yo, pull up a loop in the stitch after the skipped stitch, yo,
draw thru all 5 loops on hook*

Work the second and subsequent rounds in the spaces made by the ch-1 of the
previous round.
 
CLUSTER: (yo, insert hook in same ch-1 sp, yo, pull up a loop) 2 times,
yo, pull thru all 5 loops on hook.

REVERSE HDC (worked from left to right): yo, insert hook in st to the right, yo,
pull up a loop, yo, pull thru all 3 loops on hook.

Pattern Notes: beginning chain counts as a stitch, but do not join in it.

ROUND 1: ch 3, 11 dc in first ch. Join in first dc. Place a marker where round is
joined. (11 dc, 1 ch-2)

ROUND 2: ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join, *2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around. 1
dc in joining st of round 1. Remove marker. Join in first dc. (23 dc, 1 ch-2)

ROUND 3: ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in next st. *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in
next st. Repeat from * around. End with 2 dc in last st. Join in first dc. (35 dc, 1 ch-2)

ROUND 4: ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, 1 dc
in next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. End with 1 dc in last st. Join in first dc. (47 dc, 1 ch-2)

ROUND 5: ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in next 3 sts, *2 dc in next st, 1 dc
in next 3 sts. Repeat from * around. End with 1 dc in next 2 sts. Join in first dc.
(59 dc, 1 ch-2)

ROUND 6: ch 2, yo, pull up a loop in same st as join, sk next st, yo, pull up a loop
in next st, yo, pull thru all 5 loops on hook.
*ch 1, yo, pull up a loop in same st as last st, sk next st, yo, pull up a loop in next
st, yo, pull thru all 5 loops (cbs made). Repeat from * around. End last cbs in
same sp as first st of round, ch 1. Join in top of first cbs. (30 cbs)

ROUND 7: sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 2,
*cbs in same ch-1 sp and next ch-1 sp, ch 1. Repeat from * around. End last cbs
in same sp as first cbs started. (30 cbs)

Tip: when you get to the space with the beginning ch of the previous round, insert hook between ch and cbs, then complete the stitch. That will pull the ch-2 up and
hide it.

ROUND 8: repeat round 7

ROUND 9: repeat round 7

ROUND 10: repeat round 7

ROUND 11: sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 2,
*(cbs in same ch-1 sp and next ch-1 sp) 2 times,
(yo, insert hook in same ch-1 sp, yo, pull up a loop) 2 times,
yo, pull thru all 5 loops on hook – cluster made.
ch 1, Repeat from * around. Join in first cbs. (30 cbs and 15 clusters)

ROUND 12: sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 2,
*(cbs in same ch-1 sp and next ch-1 sp) 3 times,
cluster in same ch-1 sp, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join in first cbs. (45 cbs and 15 clusters)

ROUND 13: Repeat round 7. (60 cbs)

ROUND 14: ch 2, reverse hdc in ea ch-1 sp around. Join in first st.
 
Reverse hdc = yo, insert hook in st to the right, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull thru all 3 loops on hook.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Hi Rosey, there's a lot more steps in the crossed bar stitch than in the cluster. Take another look at the instructions and see if you can see the difference. The cbs stitch is worked over 2 stitches. The cluster is worked in 1 stitch. This is one of those things that is hard to visualize without actually doing the stitch as you read it.

If you haven't tried the stitch yet, try it and then if you still have questions about doing it, let me know and I'll work with you on it.

Hi Dot, Am trying your Safari Hat. Hope it wrks for me. I have been having trouble with Roww 11. Can you explain the difference between the cbs and the cluster? The directions look the same to me.
