copyright © 12/16/05 Dot Matthews

I came into a lot of green wool somehow and used this pattern for a great baby blanket that went to Afghans for Afghans. Thanks for posting this pattern! Absolutely best of everything to you!

I just wanted to say thank you for this design. I used it to make a blanket for my little niece or nephew who is due any day now. Since we don't know the gender of the baby I used a nice neutral print (white with specks of pink, green, and yellow) and it was absolutely beautiful. My sister loved it! Thanks again!

Hi. I'm fairly new to crocheting. I'm trying to make a baby blanket for a friend and LOVE this pattern! However, I have a question: I did the first 2 rows and now I'm a bit confused. For row 3 I'm not sure if I'm supposed to go around the "posts" of the tops of the stitches from row 2 or around the posts of the same dc's from the foundational row that I went around in row 2. Since I did the fpdc's and bpdc's, it almost looks like a row of sc's on top of the foundational dc's...so there's not much of a post there to go around. I'm using homespun yarn so thought I was just having trouble seeing it. So I tried with basic worsted weight - did it using both a K hook and an N hook (i don't have an L or M). STILL can't figure it out! PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks so much for sharing your awesome patterns!!!

I've been trying various patterns to get the basketweave appearance, and no matter what I do, I just can't get it to look right. I'll try your method.

Dot, I just wanted to say thank you. Your patterns are great and you are awesome for sharing them. I have started on your sweater. It is the first thing I have made for myself in the 20+ years I have been crocheting and knitting. God Bless you for your kindness.

I recently taught myself to crochet after moving to an area of the country where it is all the rage. I love your blog! The patterns are straightforward enough that even beginners can try them but much more interesting than standard beginner projects I've found on other sites. I'm quickly becoming addicted to this amazing craft. I look forward to seeing new things on your page in the future!

I'm so glad to have found this patter. I bought a baby blanket at a yard sale that had this pattern and for the life of me couldn't figure it out. I'm definitely going to do this one for my baby boy that's on the way! Thank you!

Hi Christy, you're right, I removed the numbers from the pattern to avoid future confusion. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. Glad you like my patterns and hope you'll share pictures when you make them. I think it's great you're teaching someone to crochet. Let's keep the art alive!

Hi Dot! I have a question - in the foundation row, you start with a chain of 116, but then said we should have 115 DC. Shouldn't that be 113 DC? I'm helping a friend do a "practice" dishcloth first before attempting the afghan and that just doesn't seem right. Thanks for all the wonderful patterns you share! I want to do them ALL! :-)

You're welcome, KnitCindy, glad you like it. Sure you can substitute the hook just remember it'll be smaller than the one I made. But it's your blanket and you make it as large as you want it. It'll work up just fine with a K hook.

I want to add this blanket to my "repetoire"!! Thanks for the pattern!!! I'm wondering if I can use a K hook instead of the L???
Thank you very much.

I have been looking for a basketweave baby blanket pattern, and this one is exactly what I wanted! My little guy or gal, who is due in June, will love it!

Thanks, Catherine. I used a large hook to get a softer feel, so that's probably why the stitches look farther apart.

Oh, wow. This blanket looks lovely. I started a similar pattern for my three year old nephew's Christmas scarf, only the front post/back posts were closer together.

Anyway, I'll have to keep this pattern in mind for my other nephew, who's due in May. Great Pattern, Dot!
