MY BIRTHDAY HAT

OWATA HAT
copyright © 07/06/04 Dot Matthews

I HOOK (cuz that's what I had with me)
Finished hat measures 21 inches around but it fits on my 23 1/2 in head.
ww yarn small amounts of each, red; yellow; green; black or color of your choice
hat weighs approximately 4 ozs.

stitches used, sl st, sc, dc, tr
starting ch counts as first stitch, numbers in ( ) at the end of the rows states number of stitches for that row.

ROW 1: ch 4, 11 dc in 1st st, join in top of ch 3. (12 sts)

ROW 2: Ch 5, tr in same st as join, (tr in next st, ch 1, tr in same st) around. Join in 4th st of starting ch. (24 tr and 12 ch 1 sps)

ROW 3: ch 1, sc in same st, (sc in next ch 1 sp, sc in next 2 tr) around. Join in 1st sc. (36 sts)

ROW 4: ch 1, sc in same st, 1 sc in next st. (2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts) around join in 1st sc. (48 sts)

ROW 5: ch 1, sc in same st, 1 sc in next 2 sts, (2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 3 sts) around. Join in 1st sc. (60 sts)

ROW 6: ch 1, sc in same st, 1 sc in next 3 sts, (2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 4 sts) around. Join in 1st sc. (72 sts)

ROW  7: ch 1, sc in same st, 1 sc in next 4 sts, (2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 5 sts) around. Join in 1st sc. (84 sts)

ROW 8: ch 3, dc in st to the right of the join (that's in the last st of the previous row) sk next st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st (that's the stitch you just skipped NOTE: this forms a crossed dc ), now working forward again, (sk next st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st) around. Join in top of beg ch 3. (42 crossed dcs)

ROW 9 - 17: repeat row 8. You should have 42 crossed dcs at the end of each row.

ROW 18: ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in each st around. (84 sts)

NOTE: decrease rows start with row 19. For a larger sized hat, skip a decrease row and repeat row 18.

ROW 19: ch 1,sc in same st as join, sc in next 4 sts, sc next 2 sts together (decrease made), (sc in next 5 sts, sc next 2 together) around. (72 sts)

ROW 20:  ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in next 3 sts, sc next 2 sts together, (sc in next 4 sts, sc next 2 sts together) around. (60 sts)

Hello! My brother just started growing dreads, and as a joke I told him I'd make him a Rasta hat. He got excited and said that if I did, he would wear it all the time. Well, I didn't think I would actually find a pattern, but thanks to you, I can make a hat for him! Thank you!

Hi!

I've been scouring Crochet Pattern Central for a hat that I could make work. You see, I wear a headscarf *constantly* and while it has nothing to do with spirituality, I feel very awkward being seen without said scarf... and this hat solves that problem for the winter! I'll be working on one tonight! Thank you so much!

Hi Jan, I don't know exactly what you're looking for, but I did a google search for "crochet kufi pattern free" and got a list of links you could choose from. You could do the same type google search and search for "crochet skully pattern free". leave the quotes off your search. Here's the link to the page I found. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=crochet+kufi+pattern+free
Good luck in your search.

Hi Sunny, how great is that! I'm glad I had something you could use. What a great mother you are! I know you must be feeling pretty good to see your son wearing a hat you made, and what a compliment that he asked you to make his friend one too. Way to go, Mom!

Hi Dot! Love this Owata hat. My son wanted a hat for his dreds, and we searched and searched for a pattern. Finally found a link to this one from crochet pattern central. Son chose his colors and it was finished in no time. He even roped me into making one for one of his friends. Thanks for showing a 15yo boy that sometimes moms are pretty great! lol.

Hi Kim, thank you, I'm glad you like it. I've only seen 1 jester hat and it's been a long time ago and I can't remember where. You might look on Crochet Pattern Central and see she has one listed. Good luck in your search.

Hi Dot, I found your website through crochetpatterncentral and I love the OWATA hat. I am trying to find a pattern for a hat that has 3 or 4 "floppy points" kinda like the hats that "court jesters" wear (that the kings and queens had for entertainment) if you know of a pattern that I can use or have on I would appreciate it. Thanks Kim

Hi Bea. No, I don't start this pattern with a loop. I start it by making a chain 4 and then working 11 double crochets in the first chain stitch. It'll be crowded but it will all fit. I then join the last double crochet to the 4th chain to close the first round. Hope this helps.

Hey! I've been crocheting for a while, but im an amateur when it comes to reading patterns. I'm a little confused as to if you start out by creating a loop. Please help!

Dot, I really enjoyed your site. I know if we lived close we'd be best of friends-our humor is alike! Your birthday hat is just like one I made using some fuzzy stuff-what's in a name anyway-and I thought it was a big disaster and although I have worn it a couple of times out and had comments about leaving it at home next time!. But, I do see a variety of ways to wear it from your pictures! Keep up the good work. And, like you, when I go out and splurge on yarn and get home I have this urge to hide from husband-What husband! For once every splurge can be left out!LOL
Hugs, Janet

Thanks for the birthday wish, Chie. I love, love, love this hat too. It made me realize how boring my colors have been until to me. I'm hoping to brighten up my yarn selections in the future. Good excuse for increasing the size of my stash! lol
