This is a small beret like hat that works up quickly and will make a very nice chemo cap. It's hard to see in the picture, but it has 2 rows of the berry stitch, which gives the hat a little more interest around the face.
VERY BERRY
copyright © 08/16/04 Dot Matthews
Hat size Adult Medium/large
Hat measures 21" relaxed; 24" stretched
K hook; Caron Simply Soft, or any WW yarn
Gauge 3 rows = 2"; 6 dc's = 2"
Note 1: Beginning ch 3 counts as first stitch
Note 2: Join rows, but do not turn.
Note 3: Numbers in ( ) at end of rows depict number of stitches for that row.
Special Stitches:
Berry Stitch - Insert hook in stitch, pull up a loop, (yo, draw through 1 loop on hook) 3 times, yo, draw through last 2 loops on hook to complete the stitch.
decrease (dec) - pull up a loop in next st, pull up a loop in next st, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
ROW 1: Ch 4, 11 dc in 1st st. (12 sts)
ROW 2: Ch 3, dc in same st as join, 2 dc in ea st around. Join in top of beg ch 3. (24 sts)
ROW 3: Ch 3, dc in same st as join, 1 dc in next st, (2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st) around. Join in top of beg chain 3. (36 sts)
ROW 4: Ch 3, dc in same st as join, 1 dc in next 2 sts, (2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 2 sts) around. Join in top of beg chain 3. (48 sts)
ROW 5: Ch 3, dc in same st as join, 1 dc in next 3 sts, (2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 3 sts) around. Join in top of beg chain 3. (60 sts)
ROW 6: Ch 3, 1 dc in next st and in each st around. Join in top of beg ch 3. (60 sts)
ROW 7: Repeat row 6.
ROW 8: Repeat row 6.
NOTE: A Berry Stitch is made similar to a single crochet but when you have 2 loops on hook, instead of yarn over and draw through both loops on hook to complete the single crochet, do 3 chains, then yo and draw through both loops on hook.
ROW 9 (Berry Stitch Row): Ch 1, Berry Stitch in same stitch as join and in each stitch around. Join in first berry stitch. (see special stitch instructions at beginning of pattern). (60 berry stitches)
ROW 10: Repeat row 9. (60 berry stitches)
ROW 11: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in next st and in ea st around. Join in first sc. (60 sts)
NOTE: Hat size can be adjusted at this point. For a larger size, repeat row 11 instead of doing row 12, then go on to row 13.
ROW 12: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in next 2 sts, (dec over next 2 sts, sc in next 3 sts) around. Join in first sc. (48 sts)
ROW 13: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in next st and in ea st around. Join in first sc. (48 sts)
ROW 14: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in next st and in ea st around. Join in first sc. (48 sts)
ROW 15: Ch 1, sl in same st as join, ch 1, (sl st in next st, ch 1) around, join in first st. Fasten off and weave in ends.

If you're having problems printing, you need to use your mouse to just copy the text and pictures of the patterns.
Put the mouse cursor next to the beginning of the text that you want to copy, press down on the LEFT mouse button. Keep your finger pressed on that button till you get to the end of the batch of text that you're wanting to copy.
The text should have blue highlights over it.
When you get to the end of the text, press the RIGHT mouse button, and a drop down menu will appear. Put your mouse on the word "Copy" and it should copy the text.
Then go into Word (or whatever program your computer has for saving documents and get a new blank document opened and then click on your right mouse again and select the word Paste. The pattern should paste into the document, so then you can either save it to your computer, or print it out. |

I am looking for a hat pattern that has earflaps and ties hanging from the earflaps.
I've seen kids (boys) wearing these hats leaving the ties hanging down without tieing them.
I call it a ski hat but can't find any patterns (free) for this type of hat.
I think they're made from worsted weight yarn.
I would like a crochet or knitted pattern.
If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
I would be happy to share my patterns with anyone and also share ideas on knitting and crocheting.
Please email any patterns or web sites that might have this type of hat pattern to me at laineysews@netnitco.net.
Thank you.

I'm totally confused and so is my mom. We've both tried the berry stitch and can't figure it out. Beginning page says yo, draw through last 2 loops on hook. There's 4 loops left, not 2. 2nd instruction states instead of yo and draw through both loops on hook, do chains, then yu and draw through both loops. Doesn't work. Can I get some more help on exactly how to do it, exactly step by step? My mom has been crocheting for over 50 years and she can't get it. Thanks. |

if i wanted to make a hat smaller than the pattern how would i do that? would i just use a smaller hook and do the same amount of stitches or do i need to decrease some of the stitches and rows? i haven't had anyone to teach me the right way to do all this stuff ... i just kinda fake my way through it and it usually turns out just fine but i wasn't sure how to make a hat smaller. thanks for you help! |

Hi Cathy. Thank you, it's good to hear you've been using my patterns. I'm so glad they've turned out good for you. I'd love to see pictures any time you want to share with me.
The link to Cuddle Me Hooded Baby Sweater was missing. I've fixed it now so you should be able to get to the pattern. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.
Happy holidays and happy hookin'! |

Love your website with all the wonderful patterns on it. Made the giddyup cowboy hat in purple and just love it. I'm going to be making quite a few hats from your patterns. Glad I found it. One question though. How come we can't get the cuddle me hooded baby sweater? I thought it might make a nice gift for someone I know who had a baby. Anyway thanks and Merry Christmas from Canada |

Hi Kimberly, this is my only experience with the berry stitch myself, so I had to refresh myself. I'd suggest you place a bobby pin in the stitch as soon as you do the last step of the berry stitch. After you've done that a few times, you should be able to see where to place the stitches easier. I often use this method when I have trouble seeing where to put a stitch. Good luck with this and I hope you let me know how it works out for you. |

This is my first attempt at using the berry stitch for anything, and I'm having a problem. I do a round of the berries as in the pattern, but then I can't figure out where on top of the stitch to join in or where to connect the stiches that go on topof them. Like I said, I've never used berry stiches before on anything, and I did several single lines of them so I would know what I was doing, but I just can't figure out where to put the ones that go on top.
Does that make any sense? :)
