Hi Dot..I just wanted to thank you for this pattern(perky puffs) I just love it!! I have made several for my grandkids, daughter and sister. I found by using two types of yarn adding three additional rows between rows 5-6 and 8-9 it works up into the cuties hat I've ever made. Reminds me of the Carol Burnet hat she always wore with the broom in the maid outfit. Soooo cute...I used Bernat soft boucle and a reg wosted and it is perfect..Thanks again honey keep up the great patterns!!!

I crochetd this pattern for my daughter and she loves it. Since then I have been experimenting with different yarn types and thickness, and have found it to be a wonderful pattern all the way around.

WOW! 10 scarves and 4 hats and only crocheting since Christmas. That's great! You must have gotten the crochet bug really bad. I think the Homespun will be too soft for this hat. It needs something that is a little stiffer to hold the shape of the brim. I did look on the Lion Brand site and found several hat patterns. Here's the urls to 2 that I think might interest you.

Hello Dot, To let you know I've only been crocheting since Christmas. I've made over ten scarves and four hats.
I just came across your puffy hat pattern. I'm having a problem trying to make a caplike hat with a 1 to 2 inch brim for my girlfriend. She gave me the yarn it is Lions Brand Yarn Homespun so it is very soft. I tried making a hat with back loop pick up but the yarn was too loose to see, so I pulled that out, then I tried another hat that was pretty straight forward but I think the pattern was wrong. So I wanted to try yours, what do you think, will it work with that yarn I mentioned? Thank you,
Debbie raggamuffin33@aol.com

Dot, I added one round like #11 and it made the hat look like it has something between a brim and a rolled edge. In any case, I like it and it does what I wanted it to, so I am happy. I took a couple of pictures for you, but I don't know how or where to post them for you.
I hope your wrists are starting to feel like themselves!

Hi Andrea, can you try adding 1 or 2 more strands of yarn to the rounds that make the brim? That will make it stiffer. I wish I knew some way to help you, but I can't think of anything else to try. I'd love to hear how this turns out for you. Happy New Year.

Hmm. I really wanted a brim, but I also really wanted to use this yarn. I think the hat without the brim looks okay, but maybe I will try to do a few rounds and figure out a way to stiffen the yarn. As you say, if it doesn't work, I can rip out the extra rounds and use it as it is now! Thanks for your suggestions and your wonderful patterns!

Thank you, Andrea, Happy New Year to you too. I'm trying to rest the wrists, but it's so hard not to pick up a hook. Yesterday, my hand was feeling much better, but this morning it's hurting again.

I'm afraid you'll probably not be able to achieve a brim that stands out using such a soft yarn. The brim needs to have some stiffness to it or it won't stand out. That being said, don't be timid to try different things, that's how you'll end up designing your own projects. Go ahead and try adding more rounds and see how you like it. It's your hat, you can make it any way you want. If you like it, it's right! If you don't like it, you can always frog it (rip it out). I hope you'll let me know how this turns out.

I think the yarn IS much softer (it's actually unbelievably soft, I can't wait to have the hat because it is so warm, too). Do you have any ideas for me? I was thinking that I could handle it being somewhat longer, do you think I should increase some more for a few rows and see what it looks like? Like I told you a while back, I am new at this and don't quite know what might come of my ideas. It makes me timid to try them.
I hope your wrists are feeling better. Don't hurry back to the hook, it will be well worth waiting. In the meantime maybe you can spend your time thinking up new things you would like to tackle when you CAN crochet!
Best of luck and Happy New Year!

Hi Andrea, the brim of this hat is made by rows 11 and 12. Take a look at the pattern again and see if you made the increases in row 11 and 12 correctly. If your increases are correct, then the only other thing I can think of is that the yarn you used is a lot softer than the Red Heart Super Saver that I used. I hope this helps you out. I'm sorry the pattern is not working the way you want it to. I'd love to hear how it ends up.

Hi Dot! I finally was able to start this hat. I worked through the twelve rows, but wound up with the rounded part for the head, without the brim. Is there something about the finishing that I should do to get a brim? It seems to me that I would need a couple of rows more to make the brim, and then, I don't really know how I would get it to stick out the way it does in your pictures.
I think just the rounded hat, kind of like a beret, looks nice, but I was excited about having a brim.
Let me know if you have any suggestions for me.
By the way, your suggestions about using a bigger hook and increasing some stitches worked great!
Thanks!

Hi Stephanie, Thank you. I'm glad you like the patterns. Sorry this one didn't turn out the way you wanted it to, but I bet this makes a really cute baby hat. I can think of 2 things that might cause the problem. You might have used a lighter weight yarn than Red Heart Super Saver, and/or your tension is much tighter than mine. Try using a larger hook, J or even K. This will give you a larger hat. I'd like to hear how this turns out for you.

I love your patterns and I have worked several but I had a slight problem with this one. My finished hat wasn't even big enough for my 3 year old. I counted my stitches and I used the correct hook so I was just wondering if you had any ideas what I could have done wrong? It's still adorable and I'm going to give it to my friends' baby, but I'd like to make one for myself. Thanks for any suggestions!

Thanks,Dot. I will try it and let you know how that works out!

Hi Andrea Friedmann. I would suggest going up a hook size from an I to a J. Work rows 1 thru 5 to see if it looks like it's going to fit the crown of your head.

Or, you could continue the increase rows, adding one more stitch between the increase of puff stitch and dc in the same st.

Good luck, I hope this helps.

Hi! I used one of your patterns for a wimple before and it worked wonderfully. Now I want to make this hat to match a poncho my mother-in-law knitted for me. The wool is natural Alpaca and it is thinner than ww yarn, even when I double it, I don't think it quite matches that weight. Do you have suggestions for how I can try modifying your pattern so that I can use this yarn and still get a hat that's a normal size?
Thanks for anything you can think of! (I am not very good at adapting patterns and making these things up on my own, I haven't been at this for that long!)

Hi Susan in Arkansas, I'm so glad you found my site. My best wishes for your friend. I hope she makes a speedy recovery. I designed most of my hats with chemo patients in mind. It's my pleasure to share my patterns with you.

Hi

I just saw your pattern for hats on the web and plan on trying one for a friend who has cancer and has lost all her hair.

Thanks for making it for free.

Yay! I'm glad you like it. I think it'll look great on you. It's too late to submit patterns now, I've already sent in 4 and I'm waiting to hear from them. In the meantime, I keep on making hats. I've got another one almost finished. Send a picture when you finish your hat and I'll put it in the hall of fame. (((hugs)))

Sis, this is your best one yet, as far as I'm concerned. This hat is so cute - I love it. I'm gonna make one and see how it turns out for me. Way to go, girl - this is a winner - you should submit this one to the mag.
