FROM WIP TO WIL TO PONCHO
DOOVER - a poncho by Dot
copyright 092904 Dot Matthews

Materials: ww yarn, a little over 16 oz
K hook
Size: I'm guessing this will fit a child aged 10 to 12.
Amount of yarn is approximate. I weighed the poncho after completion and it was a titch over 16 oz. I recycled a WIP and didn't have any labels to refer to.
Poncho is done in 2 panels that are each 16 ½ inches x 27 inches.
Specialty stitch
Berry Stitch…Insert hook in st, pull up a loop, (yo, draw thru 1 loop on hook) 3 times, yo, draw thru last 2 loops on hook to complete.
Note 1: turning chains do not count as a stitch.
Note 2: numbers in ( ) at end of row depicts number of stitches for the row.
Note 3: count the ch-1 space as a stitch
Make 2 panels
ROW 1: ch 78, sc in 2nd st from hook, ch 1, sk 1, sc in next st across. (77 sts, count ch 1 spaces and sc's) Ch 1, turn
ROW 2: sc in each sc and in each ch-1 space across. (77 sts) Ch 2, turn
ROW 3: Hdc in first st, (ch 3, sk 3 sts, Hdc in next st) across. (19 ch-3 spaces) Ch 1, turn
ROW 4: sc in first st, (3 sc over ch-3 sp, sc in next st) across. (77 sts) Ch 1, turn
ROW 5: sc in first st, (ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in next st) across. (77 sts) Ch 1, turn
ROW 6: sc in first st, Berry Stitch in next st, sc in next st, across (77 sts, count berry stitch and sc's) Ch 1, turn
Berry Stitch…Insert hook in st, pull up a loop, (yo, draw thru 1 loop on hook) 3 times, yo, draw thru last 2 loops on hook to complete.
ROW 7: sc in each st across. (77 sts) Ch 2, turn
ROW 8: Hdc in first st, (ch 3, sk 3 sts, Hdc in next st) across. (19 ch-3 spaces) Ch 1, turn
ROW 9: sc in first st, (3 sc over ch-3 sp, sc in next st) across. (77 sts) Ch 1, turn
ROW 10: sc in each st across. (77 sts) Ch 2, turn
ROW 11: sc in first st, (ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in next st) across. (77 sts) Ch 1, turn
ROW 12: sc in first st, Berry Stitch in next st, sc in next st, across (77 sts, count berry stitch and sc's) Ch 1, turn
Berry Stitch…Insert hook in st, pull up a loop, (yo, draw thru 1 loop on hook) 3 times, yo, draw thru last 2 loops on hook to complete.
Repeat Rows 7 thru 12 until there are 7 berry stitch rows (or size needed), ending with Repeat row 7 thru 10 once more.
Fasten off and weave in ends. Assemble poncho by sewing narrow side to long side, fold into poncho shape and sew the other narrow side to the other long side.

Hi Amy, yes, baby fingering is thinner than sport weight. Here's a link to a yarn chart that I use.

OK, Miss Girly Girl, no screaming here, lol. Your idea sounds great but if you're asking me to make it for you I'm afraid I just don't have time right now. Sorry.

Don't scream! Any way to make the Double Crossed Hat pattern with brim same all the way around. Want to add 2nd strand in fluffy Paton Allure and then flower on side. I'm a girlie girl.

Hi Ginny, yes, sk = skip. When you count the stitches for the row, count all the chain 1 spaces and the single crochets and you should end up with 77 total stitches. The chain 1 will take the place of the skipped stitch. Hope this helps.

I am interested in making the Doover-a ponch by Dot. However, I have been reading over the pattern and cannot figure out the first row. It says chain 78 then sc in 2nd stitch form hook,ch l, sk 1...
What does the sk stand for. If it is skip I will not end up with 77stitches. I hope you can help me.

Hi Carol-Ann, thank you for your kind words. You sound just like me. I had to take an early retirement due to disability, too, and if I didn't have crocheting, I'd be so crazy by now. I enjoy sharing my patterns with everyone and hearing how they have used them. You'll have so much fun making your Christmas gifts next year and your family and friends will be so lucky to get them.
 | | | Carol-Ann January 15, 2005 03:20 PM PST
Dear Dot,
Thank you for sharing your patterns. They are so good and easy to follow.
After retiring through ill health/disability, I decided I needed to learn some hobbies to stop me going ga ga! I knew the basics of crochet but had never really used my skills. It is through sites such as yours that I have progressed to an advanced beginning stage and am now starting to think of all the presents I can make for NEXT Christmas!
Cash poor, time rich
really helps you learn that stitch!
Thank you again for your kindness,
Love Carol-Ann, Liverpool UK

Hi Coleen. "pull up a loop" not written very clearly, sorry. After you insert your hook in the stitch, yo, and pull thru stitch, (2 loops on hook), yo, pull thru 1 loop, yo, pull thru 1 loop, yo, pull thru 1 loop, then yo and pull thru 2 loops. If you still aren't getting it, just let me know and I'll go at it from a different angle.
 | | | Colleen December 5, 2004 10:33 AM PST
Dot, I haven't crocheted in a while but think I can handle your berry stitch in the Doover a poncho. I'm having trouble interpreting the "pull up a loop" after you insert the hook in stitch. Pull up a loop from where? Everything else I understand.

Hi Angela, Thank you, I'm glad you like my site. WW yarn stands for worsted weight yarn, I believe it's the same as what you'd call a double knit yarn. SK means to skip. I hope that helps. Just let me know if you have any more questions.
 | | | Angela November 30, 2004 04:52 AM PST
Hi Dot I am writing from the uk I love your site. I am hving a few problems with the abbreviations, what is ww yarn? what is a sk stitch? I do hope that you can help me thank you

Pam, here's a link to a site that has size information for all sizes. http://webpages.charter.net/langkilde/Roz's%20PonchoAnyone.html
Maybe this will help you. I'll send you an email.

I would like to make this for myself. Do you have the instructions that would fit an adult?
This is so different from all of the other ponchos I have seen!

Thank you, Deb. I try to keep my patterns easy enough for all to use from the novice on up. If you have any questions, just remember, I'm only a keyboard away. Email me and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Hope you enjoy the pattern.

Recently I made the three colored poncho but the finished product shows where each row is connected. What did I do wrong?

Hi Linda. The only fringe I've used in many years is called "stout fringe" and is crocheted. Here's a link to how to do it. I liked it because it turned out all even and didn't need to be trimmed, and it won't fray.
http://hometown.aol.com/lffunt/stoutfringe.htm
I don't do fringe very much so I don't really know what to do about fraying fringe, but you might try tying each end
 | | | Linda October 26, 2004 11:14 PM PDT
any ideas on how to keep fringe from fraying ...... Thank you ! linda
 | | | Dot October 25, 2004 01:25 PM PDT
Here's a link to a hook conversion chart. http://www.yarnfwd.com/crochetconv.html
The K hook is 6.5 metric according to the chart.
Here's a link to information on yarn.
http://www.yarnfwd.com/crochetconv.html
Worsted Weight is the equivelant of double knitting according to the chart.
I didn't make a gauge/swatch, but you should be able to use any size hook and any size yarn with this pattern and make your rectangles the size you want to make your poncho.
Hope this helps. | |
 | | | Dawn October 25, 2004 12:18 PM PDT
Dot, Can you tell me the tension swawtch (I think you call it the gague) you used in the poncho and what thickness of yarn, as I don' know what WW means could it be UK double knit? Can you also let me know what metric crochet hook size I would in the UK (don't know about the K needle size)?
Many thanks
Dawn. | |

Hi Bonnie, I don't see any reason why you couldn't use cotton to make this poncho. I can't think of any pitfalls you might run into. This was a new stitch to me too, and I enjoyed it very much. Have fun making the poncho and let me know if I can help you in any way.
 | | | bonnie October 24, 2004 08:15 AM PDT
Do you think I can make this with cotton yarn? Any precautions? What would I need to know?
Thanks. Its a very pretty pattern with a stitch I've never done. A challenge.

Hi Kathy,
That's great! Don't you just love it when things work out right? I'm sure your granddaughter thinks you're the bestest grandma in the world. I'd love to see a picture of your granddaughter wearing her new poncho.

I asked you a question and you got right back, now it's going so nice and easy, thanks this is a really nice thing you are doing, I went everywhere to get a pattern for a poncho for my granddaughter and couldn't, you saved the day and are making me look very good.
Thanks

Hi Laura. It's my good luck you found my site. Thank you for your kind words. I'm very new at designing and I can't wait to show off what I've done. What better way than to post it on the web so others can see it and hopefully comment on it. I get a great deal of satisfaction out of sharing my designs and love getting comments from my fellow crocheters. Thank you for taking the time to leave me a note.
 | | | Laura October 7, 2004 10:43 PM PDT
Hi! I came across your site by luck! Not only am I extremely impressed by your beautiful work but I think its wonderful that you have shared the patterns as well, it's very generous as I know some are very protective over their patterns, and I think it's so great of you!
 | | | Dot October 4, 2004 11:10 PM PDT
Hi Kathy, Thank you I'm glad you like the pattern.
I'd try it with the I hook and if that still looks too large, drop down another size or two.
On row 6, count the ch 1 spaces as a stitch. I'm sorry I didn't make that clearer. I'm going to put a note on the pattern right now. Thanks for the question.
Have fun with the pattern and let me know how this works out for you. I'd love to see a picture.
 | | | Dot October 4, 2004 11:02 PM PDT
Hi Roxie, I think you should be able to adjust this to fit a 4 year old. Try it with a H hook, or make the starting chain shorter and then do less rows to make the panel narrower. Don't let it stress you, this is an easy pattern and you should be able to have fun with it. Let me know how it's going and I'll help you with it if you need me. I'm only a keyboard away.
 | | | kATHY October 4, 2004 10:28 PM PDT
This pattern is beautiful, just what my Granddaughter's wanted.
I do have a question. My Granddaughter is 6 years old, to make this smaller would I just use a smaller hook?(like a I) also on row 6 -sc and berry stich in all the stiches .. that's counting the ch one spaces in row 5?
Thankyou for your help.
 | | | roxie in oh October 4, 2004 09:58 PM PDT
Dot, can you tell me if it is possible to make this for a 4 year old? I promised her one months ago and still haven't made one tried to make the one my mom used forget it made me think I am dumb
