BABY PONCHO

BABY SHORT ROUND PONCHO
copyright © 10/09/04 Dot Matthews
Chelle's baby poncho

This is Chelle's version of the Short Round Poncho. The picture shown is Chelle's finished baby outfit. She added the rose embellishment and made a matching headband. She has graciously allowed me to post her changes and her picture. You can find the headband instructions at the end of this pattern, compliments of Chelle of Luv to Crochet, but I'm afraid you're on your own for the rose embellishment. Thank you, Chelle, this is beautiful.

Due to popular demand, I'm including a link to a 2 layered rose.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Attach yarn in any st at neck edge and repeat round 1 and round 2 of edging. Fasten off and
weave in ends.

CHELLE'S HEADBAND

For the headband, K hook, I did:

Ch 8

Row 1: sc in 2nd chain from hook, (ch 1, skip next ch, sc in next ch) to end, ch 4 (counts
as first dc plus ch 1) , turn

Row 2: crossed bar st in first and next ch sp, ch 1, crossed bar st in same sp and in next ch
sp, ch 1, dc in last sc, ch 4, turn

Row 3: Repeat row 2 until headband measures desired length before stretching.

Headband will stretch about an inch to fit also. At the end of your last crossed bar st row,

ch 1, turn

Last Row: sc in each st and sp across (7 sc)

Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing. Sew ends of headband together. Sew on crocheted flower or rose as desired to finish the look. Here's a link for a flower you can use.

This pattern looks very pretty. I would like to use this pattern for a 2-year old toddler. Would these measurements be ok? If not, how many chains do I start with. I'm not very creative when it comes to crocheting, and I need to strictly follow instructions. Hence this question.

Hi Joanne, I'm glad you like the poncho and sorry you're having trouble with the stitch. I'd be happy to help you if you'll use the "contact me" link (just below Spike's picture) and give me specifics on what trouble you're having, I'll email you right back and we can work on this together. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Joyce, no, I don't do doll clothes and barbie is way to little for me. You can try a google search for crochet barbie clothes and I'm sure you'll get a lot of hits. Good luck with your search.

Please tell me the gauge for the "Baby Short Round Poncho" as I live abroad and cannot get the yarn required though I do have some soft pink yarn that might possibly work. I've no babies around to measure and see if what I am doing is going to be all right or not. Thank you. Cheers, Alita Thorpe david@residence78.fsnet.co.uk

Isa, I wish I knew for sure what you said, but from what I get from the translated page, you don't really care much for anything poncho. That's OK, everyone has different tastes. Thanks for the pattern, here, Dot! I just finished this one for my daughter's babysitter's daughter--does that make sense? For my own daughter, I'm planning on just going up a hook size or 2, and maybe even just using the same pattern with a P hook for me and the babysitter--I love the mother/daugher poncho thing, especially with 2 boys! Thanks again!~Virginia

Sherry, I would love to see a picture of your finished outfit, but I can't answer a single one of the questions you have about this poncho. Chelle, of Luv 2 Crochet, is the one who adapted my poncho to a child sized version. You can see what she writes about it if you go to her site, http://www.luv2crochet.com/blog/ and click on archive, then look for an entry dated Friday, October 15.
It's her headband pattern too, so you can ask her about the measurements. I'm sure she would be happy to answer your questions. Sorry I'm no help on this one.

Dot, I would love to use this pattern for a one year old, but use a 4 ply yarn instead of baby yarn. What size hook would you recommend? How large is the opening for the head, how long in the measurement for the lenght, and what is the circumference for the skirt bottom. Also what is the measurement you used for the circumference of the head band. I will send you a picture of my project when I have completed it if you like.

Thank You, Sherry

This the cutest little poncho I ever saw! I'm going to try to adapt it to fit my 6-year old granddaughter. I also plan to make it "just this size" for a friend in my church who is expecting a girl soon (so they tell her!) Thanks for the pattern. Keep on keepin' on!

Thank you Anna. I've never actually made this pattern at all. I designed the Short Round Poncho. Chelle's the one who adapted the pattern to the baby sized pattern you see here. I think if you drop your hook size down to an H or I you would probably get the size you're looking for. That's what I'd do if I were going to make it for a child younger than 12 months. I'd love to hear how your's works out. Good luck and have fun with it.
