I haven't made this hat yet. It's absolutely beautiful. Dot can you tell me the guage? Your pattern doesn't mention it anywhere and I don't think I'll be using Red Heart.

It would be very helpful

Dear Dot. Together we have 131 years of crochet experience and it took all three of us an hour to figure out row 7. We can't wait to start row 8. We're hoping that it fits our petite daughter/cousin's head who is in college. If row 8 is anything like row 7 she better wear it everyday.

I love this hat. All my daughters have at least one Some changes I have incorporated into the pattern to tie the petals together without the noticeable gap are as follows:
1. Every time the pattern says ch 6, I ch 5.
2. I locate the 2 dtr into the ch 1 that closed the cluster, instead of the 6th ch from the hook.
3. In row 6, the final step 5 cluster is worked into the base of the ch 5 cluster (the eye).
4. In row 7, the final step 2 and 3, instead of the ch 1 to close the cluster, I join with a sl st in eye of first cluster.
I also have added an optional Row 9 to add a ruffle edge. It is as follows:
ch2, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in ch 3 sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in each ch 3 sp around. Join in 1st dc, fasten off and weave in ends.
This option is beautiful on little girls.
 | | | Amanda March 7, 2007 03:18 AM PST
Mine also came out way too short. I just tacked on three extra rows- two rows of dcs and then I ended with a row of scs. Hope you don't mind that I modified your pattern a bit! It came out beautiful. The flowers are on the crown of the head and the rim is solid. I love this hat! Can't wait to make one in every color.

Nice pattren. The tutorial makes the flowers very clear. I copied the pattern a while ago, but finally decided to make it last night.
I did row 7 twice, making the hat deep enough to cover my ears and used a size "H" hook. It came out beautifully, with a double row of flowers instead of a single one.

I'm so glad you included your website with the pattern from the 2006 pattern a day calendar. The way your instructions are written here are ten times easier to understand than in the calendar. I actually thought I understood row 6 until I tried row 7 and it didn't fit correctly. Now I know it wasn't just me >.<
 | | | Missy-Lissa September 14, 2006 01:31 AM PDT
I tried this twice, and the first time I messed up and it was brutal .. this big square hole in the side! >_< But I tried again, this time with a N hook and two strands of sport-weight baby yarn held together (white and pink), and it's perfect. Thank you!!
 | | | Cassie September 9, 2006 01:31 PM PDT
All right, I need help! I got through the pattern alright, i finished all of the instructions, but the hat turned out way way to short! What did I do wrong?!?!
 | | | Kathy April 15, 2006 11:51 AM PDT
If you use the J hook like it says but make it EXTREMELY CRAZY loose... like... one chain is 1/4 or even 1/3 of an inch (really, that loose)... a dc is an inch, then itll be big enough.
I actually like this pattern better chaining 5 instead of 6... 6 is too loose for me if imake it big enough.
Hope this helps | |

Hi Nish, thank you, this is a very popular hat. I'm sorry yours turned out too small. Your tension and mine must be very different. I used Red Heart Super Saver medium weight yarn for this pattern.
 | | | Nish January 29, 2006 05:05 AM PST
hi, seems such a nice hat pattern but even using onw size larger hook the hat is not even the size of a child

Kathy, there is a link on the front page that takes you to instructions on how to print out just the pattern. You need to hightlight the pattern, then select print, then click on selection and the print, or highlight the pattern, copy it and past it in a word document and print it from there.
 | | | Kathy Wick December 28, 2005 08:36 PM PST
I just want the pattern, not 12 pages of comments, its a waste of paper, I like your patterns, but please I can't afford to use 12 pieces of paper of no use to me.

Hi Laura, I'm glad this hat turned out so good for you and your mother loved it. I'm so sorry to hear of your Mom's illness. I hope she gets well soon. Happy holidays to you and yours.
 | | | Laura L December 19, 2005 08:36 AM PST
Hi, Dot! Just finished this hat for my dear mom's birthday...it's just so pretty! She is having a 2nd round of chemo & although she hasn't lost all her hair this time, it is thin & not the nicest. I told her this hat was more for "beauty" than "warmth"--I am in the midst of making your scarf/hat combo for that--& she just loved it! She can wear it when she feels she is having a really "bad hair" day! Your directions were perfect--I didn't even need the tutorial directions. Thanks for this!
 | | | Dot December 18, 2005 07:31 PM PST
It's supposed to be adult sized. If it's too small, try using a larger hook.
 | | | Basil December 18, 2005 07:15 PM PST
Is this a child or adult sized hat? I am halfway through row 6 and I am beginning to think it is a child sized one....how to make it adult sized?
 | | | Dot November 14, 2005 11:53 AM PST
You're welcome, Jeanne. I'm so glad you took a chance and tried this hat. It's so exciting when you discover that you can do whatever you set out to do. I got your contact message and sent you an email. I'd love to see a picture of your finished project and share it in my hall of fame blog. Good luck with your future projects. I hope to hear from you again.

Thanks for letting me use this pattern to make a hat. I dont consider myself to be an expert crocter but when I made this hat, I felt sso good about myself and I realized that I underestimate my talents. Thanks for sharing and I will be back in the future for more patterns. :)

Dear Dot,
Your patterns take yarn and elevate to art! Thank you for sharing your breathtaking creations, I can't wait to try them! Best wishes for you and Spike.

Hi Llewellyn, I'm glad you like this pattern, it's one of my favorites. I'm very impressed with your achievement, this is a pretty advanced pattern. I bet you're the youngest person to make this pattern. I'm glad your friends liked it too. I know that made you very proud.
 | | | Llewellyn October 19, 2005 05:21 PM PDT
I really love this pattern! I am 13 but pretty advanced at crochet. This one took me two tries but I'm really happy with how it turned out. I wore it to school and everybody loved it. Thanks!

Hi Lindsay, thank you, I'm glad you like my site. This hat has been really popular, I'm glad it turned out well for you. I did write up a quickie scarf pattern that should work (in theory) since I've never made the scarf. It's called "A Scarf for Lizzy" and the link is under miscellaneous patterns on the left of the screen. Here's a link to it in case you miss it. I'd love to hear how it turns out if you try it.

You have such fantastic patterns here, and I find your site to be very useful! I made this hat and it turned out beautifully--the best thing I've ever made! I want to make a matching scarf. I've already tried applying the same technique to do so, but the flowers don't seem to work on a flat surface (or something other than working in rounds). Is there anything you could suggest? Thanks!
 | | | Dot September 10, 2005 08:48 PM PDT
Hi Jamie, I'm excited you found my site too. I love having new people come here and use my patterns. I bet your baby looks adorable in her new hat. Thanks stopping by and leaving a comment.
 | | | Jamie September 10, 2005 08:30 PM PDT
this is an incredible hat - I'm kind of a beginner, so it took me 3 hats to get it to look right. but I just finished one for my infant daughter and it is SO SWEET. I did it a bit on the small side, though - so I thinkI'm gonna do another and give this one to my friend who is expecting a baby girl next month. thnks for the pattern. I'm going to check out your others too. I'm so excited to have found your site.

Hi Marilyn, you're welcome. I haven't seen the calendar yet so I wasn't aware that the instructions in the calendar are different from mine here. I'm glad you came to my site and found the pattern here easier to follow and understand.
 | | | Marilyn September 8, 2005 11:20 AM PDT
Hello Dorothy,
My daughter, Anais, bought a calendar, Crochet Pattern-a-Day 2006, and loves your Lizzy Cap hat. She is left handed (for eating she use the right!) and has some difficulties trying to do crochet. She does it fast though, but lacks confidence.
Well the instructions on the calendar pages are completely deferent to yours on the web. You do explain and write them clear. Thank you for sharing your patterns and taking time to give a tutorial too.
Thank you very much,
Marilyn

Hi Anna, I never thought of this hat for a baby, but I bet it's really cute. I'm glad you like the pattern.
 | | | Anna July 2, 2005 02:59 AM PDT
This is beautiful - I whipped one up in white baby yarn with a G hook, all I had on hand after finishing up a baby afghan, and made the cutest little baby cap. Can't wait to get some real-size yarn and a big hook to make one for myself!

On a K hook using worsted I think my gauge was too small, even though I tried to keep it all loose. So I found some slightly larger than worsted in my stash and it's perfect!
Thanks dot! | |

Hi Rhonda. Thank you. I'm glad you like my patterns. This one is definitely one of my favorites. I loved working with this stitch. I hope you don't have any problems with it, but if you do, don't hesitate to contact me and I'll do my best to help you through it. I can't wait to see a picture when you're through.

Hello, Dot - I just wanted to say I love your patterns, especially this one! I started working on this this morning, and I'm hoping to have it done by bedtime tonight - I'm about to start on the flowers, and so I'm very glad you've got that step 6 tutorial! This has been fun so far... I'll post a photo when I'm done :)

There is another way to print w/o the extras. Highlight wat you want to print. Click edit, click copy. Go to print. Click selection, click ok and it will print w/o the extras. Hope this helps.

Hi Michele, Don't you just love telling someone, who just gave you a compliment, that you made it yourself? I'm glad you decided to let me know about your hat. Sounds like you're really enjoying it.
After reading your post it occured to me that I should put a link to the tutorial on the pattern so others can find it. Thanks for giving me the idea.
 | | | Michele February 5, 2005 12:06 PM PST
I've been meaning to post to say that I made this hat for myself just before Christmas and it turned out so well (once I found the tutorial). I even made a matching scarf. I love wearing it, and I love knowing that I made it myself. Thanks for the pattern!
 | | | Dot February 4, 2005 12:23 PM PST
I wish I knew how to make a printer friendly page. It would help alot. Try this, highlite the pattern, copy it, then paste it in a word document on your pc and save it in a folder you can find. If you give me your email address, I'll be happy to email you a clean copy.
 | | | Name February 4, 2005 12:12 PM PST
A printer-friendly version of this gorgeous pattern would be sooo great. Not really interested in printing all the well-deserved compliments :)
 | | | Dot February 3, 2005 08:47 AM PST
Hi Michelle, there is a tutorial for the hat listed directly under the link for the hat. I'll put the link here so you'll be sure to see it. http://bythehook.blogdrive.com/archive/97.html
I'm glad your modifications work for you. Let me know if you still have questions.
 | | | Michelle February 3, 2005 08:11 AM PST
Can you provide a picture for the 7th row beginning so I can see where step 3 goes? I still have troubles with beginning this round.
I did modify the beginning of this pattern to include the ch-3 and it worked perfect. Same counts as the original.
Thank you,
Michelle | |

Hi Gali. Wow! Israel, isn't wonderful how the internet brings us closer together. I'm in North Carolina, USA. Good luck with the hat, and let me know if you need help with it.
 | | | Gali January 26, 2005 06:09 AM PST
Hi dot,
The tutorial looks great and very helpful - i'm sure I can make it now :).
and just to let you know that you have visitor from Israel :)
| |
 | | | Dot January 25, 2005 12:24 PM PST
Hi Gali, this is a very popular hat, but somewhat complicated. If you take each row at a time and each step at a time, you should be able to do it. There is a tutorial showing what row 6 looks like, if you need help with that. I'd love to hear from you on how it goes.
 | | | Gali January 25, 2005 11:46 AM PST
Looks great...going to try it...
I hope I'll understand how :)
 | | | Dot January 6, 2005 07:19 PM PST
Wow, Christine! You did a great job on the hat and so quickly too. I'm glad Hammie shared it with you. Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate you taking time to leave me a message and letting me see your picture.
 | | | Christine January 6, 2005 06:05 PM PST
Hi Dot! First, let me say that I LOVE this pattern. You are truly an amazingly talented woman! Hammie sent me the link to this hat and within 2 hours I had finished it! I messed up several times in the 7th row, but only because I was preoccupied with looking at your other patterns lol.
If you click my name, it'll take you to a picture of me wearing my new beautiful hat. Thank you so much!
 | | | Dot January 6, 2005 11:45 AM PST
Well, thank you, Sarah. I'm glad you like the patterns and I appreciate you telling me they're easy to follow. I try to make them as simple as possible. I bet you were a hit at your secret sisters salad supper.
 | | | Sarah January 5, 2005 09:31 PM PST
I really liked how this hat looked, so I chose this pattern to make for our secret sister salad supper at church. They asked for us to wear a red hat if we are 50 or over and a pink hat if we are under 50, and to decorate it. Well I don't have a pink hat, so I am glad I found this pattern! It worked up beautifully! I really like your instructions too! They are easy to follow! Thanks for providing your hat patterns! I love making them!
 | | | Dot December 17, 2004 10:05 PM PST
Thank you, Erin. So glad you like the pattern. I can't wait to hear how your sister likes the hat. I'm sure she'll love it because you made it for her.
 | | | Erin December 17, 2004 09:25 PM PST
This is a great hat! Once you get the hang of the complicated parts, it moves really fast! I think it only took me about two hours from start to finish. My sister is going to love it (I hope!) Kudos for pattern AND pictures!
 | | | Dot December 5, 2004 04:47 AM PST
Hi Linda. You're welcome. I'm glad to know you find my patterns easy to follow, but I'm sorry you've had to use them under these circumstances. I hope your sister has a speedy and complete recovery.
 | | | Linda December 4, 2004 11:10 PM PST
Dear Dot,
Thank you for some really wonderful, easy to understand patterns for hats! I have made several from your patterns for my sister, who is undergoing chemo. She loves them, too.
 | | | Dot November 27, 2004 05:46 PM PST
Thank you, Susan, sounds like you've worked this out to a fine art. I can just see your hooks flying right now. 30 minutes a hat is really very good. Oh, by the way, I think they would make beautiful Christmas tree ornaments. lol
 | | | Susan November 27, 2004 01:35 PM PST
I just love this hat!!! I admit, first one I made, took me 4 hours! At that time, not a pattern I liked too much. However, I just kept making them. Used up all sorts of bits of yarn. Anyway, down to around 30 minutes a hat. At this rate, I may have to use them as Christmas tree decorations! LOL

Hi Erica,
Row 1 starts with chain 3, then you do 12 double crochets in the first chain, then you join with a slip stitch in the first double crochet.
I think it's great that you want to make a gift for your mom, but you have chosen one of the hardest patterns to start with. This pattern is geared to the more experienced crocheters. I don't want to discourage you, but I recommend that you find an easier pattern to make your first hat. There are hundreds of free patterns on the net. Crochet Pattern Central is a great place to find free patterns. Look in the hats section, I'm sure you'll find something there you like and that's much easier to do. Here's a link to the hats. http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/hats.php
| |
 | | | Erica November 17, 2004 12:36 PM PST
How do you start row 1. I'm just a beginner and I want to make a gift for my mom. I've practice making afghan. How much chains do you need?
 | | | Dot November 14, 2004 06:21 PM PST
Hi Chase, did you see the picture's I posted explaining row 6? If you made it through row 6, row 7 is pretty much worked the same way but the stitches are placed in the "eye" formed by the chain 1 that closed the dtr clusters. I got your email and just sent you a reply, but I didn't mention row 7.
 | | | chase November 14, 2004 03:30 PM PST
Can someone answer a ? for me? Anybody, it doesn't matter. I'm kinda new at this and I know its difficult but could someone explain to me in detail how to do the first couple of steps of row 7. It would help me out alot. Thanks.
 | | | Dot November 14, 2004 11:11 AM PST
Hi Aimee, I'm sorry you're having trouble with this pattern. I'm just getting ready to post a picture tutorial showing how to follow this pattern. I hope that will clear up your questions, if it doesn't, email me at bythehook7647@yahoo.com. I really want you to succeed with your project, so don't hesitate to email me.
 | | | aimee November 14, 2004 01:30 AM PST
I don't understand your steps. I didn't originally know what dtr meant, but i found the abbreviation meaning online. I don't know what "ea" means. and i don't understand the whole leaving 3 or 6 loops on the hook. I've crocheted some things before, so i'm not totally new. I have been able to read patterns, but I"m having trouble with this one. If you could clarify the steps in dumber terms, I'd appreciate it.

ps. my email is asb193@psu.edu if you want to mail the dumber pattern, i don't know if you post things on here or how it will work that I see what the change is.

Hi Barbara, thanks for spreading the word. I'm so happy to know that my patterns are being used for charity. I feel like I've contributed in a small way everytime I hear someone has used my pattern to donate. I'll have to try the 2 toned hat to see how it looks, it sounds lovely. Thanks for the feedback, I always love hearing from you.

Hi Dot, Just wanted you to know that I have been telling the ladies that I meet with to crochet for charity about your hat designs. Well they finally caught on and one lady came in with several hats made with your Flower hat design. They are wonderful. One of them she made with solid yarn for the crown and brim and used a matching verigated yarn for the flowers. it turned out wonderfully. She gave the pattern to another lady at the meeting today and she almost completed the hat while we were there.
Guess I'll have to try one now. :)

Thank you, Donna, for your feedback. I appreciate you telling me the pattern is easy to follow. I've worried about that. I try to make my patterns as simple as possible. I'd love to see a picture of your finished hat if that's possible.

I came across this hat pattern on www.crochetpatterncentral.com I printed it last night and crocheted it in maybe a little over an hour. How beautiful. I must also compliment you on the simple and easy reading. Any star pattern I have purchased is painful reading. Thank you for sharing.

I'm very excited to have found this page. I start Chemo on Monday and my Mom has volunteered to crochet me some caps to wear when the inevitable happens. She spent an hour at the local Rag Shop today and came up empty on patterns to use. Now I've got a wonderful pattern for her to follow.
THANK YOU, thank you, thank you!!
