OOPS! CORRECTION ON THE RIBBED BERET
I screwed up! Well, there's no other way to say it. The beret is supposed to be worked in the back loops only throughout the pattern. This little tidbit was left off the pattern when I posted it. Information about the yarn I used was also left off the pattern. It was an error in the html and since I'm so proficient (NOT) in html, I didn't even notice it was wrong. I wish you could have seen the goble d goop I just cleaned up. One whole segment was entered completely backwards. Each word was readable but the sentences were from right to left with weird sybpols in between each word.
I've corrected it now and I apologize to everyone and hope it didn't mess you all up too bad. I know of at least one person who is working on her second beret trying to get it to be large enough. Marvie, I'm so sorry. Please don't be too mad at me.

While I was working on the ribbed ski hat I realized the ribbing made a nice neck warmer, so I created a neck warmer. I decided my foam head looked way to bare with just the neck warmer,she needed a hat. Someone on Crochetville mentioned a beret yesterday and that's just what the neck warmer wanted. So here's the pair. Patterns are listed at the left under hats and miscellaneous. Hope you enjoy them.
Alice left a comment saying that the neck warmers are also worn as hats in Italy. They just pull them down over the head and long haired ladies let their hair hang out the top. To bad all my foam heads are bald. I'd like to see how that looks.

The yarn I used was donated to me and is a brand I've never seen before. The label says "Super Soft 3" and it's "imported by Lana Moro Inc. in New York". Caron Simply Soft would be a good substitute.
I used 2 1 3/4 oz skeins.

NOTE: do not join rounds, place a marker in the first stitch to count rounds. Move the marker up at the end of each round.

HASCARF
(hat/scarf)

Size: Adult hat 21" to 23", hat portion measures 10 1/2" from crown to edge; scarf portion measures 6" by 42" from the bottom of the scarf to the crown of the hat.
Materials: M hook, Red Heart Super Saver yarn, approximately 8 oz
Pattern is worked holding 2 strands of yarn together
Gauge – 4 dc = 2" and 2 rows = 2"
Abbreviations used:
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
ea – each
sl st – slip stitch
Note 1: ch 2 does not count as a stitch
Note 2: when joining rounds, skip over the beginning chain and join in the first "real" stitch.
Note 3: for a longer scarf, keep working in rows until scarf is as long as you want.
ROW 1: ch 14, dc in 3rd ch from hook and in ea ch to end. (12 dc) ch 2, turn
ROW 2 thru 40: dc in ea st across. ch 2, turn at the end of ea row. (12 dc)
The next row is worked as a round as follows: crochet in the back loops all the way across. When you get to the end, do not turn, skip the beginning ch 2, then, continue on the same round by crocheting in the front loops of the same row.

I've always loved the way the broomstick lace stitches look, so I decided to try my hand at a hat using that stitch. I've tried to explain how to do the stitch, but in case you have trouble understanding my directions, I've listed a few sites that have better instructions and pictures on how to do broomstick lace.

size 50 Broomstick Lace Pin
Red Heart Super Saver approximately 2 oz.
Adult size: 23"
Gauge: 1 group of the broomstick lace = 1" across by 1.5" tall (approximately)
6 hdc = 2"
2 rows of hdc = 1"
abbreviations used:
ch – chain
tr – treble crochet – yo twice, insert hook in designated stitch, yo, pull thru stitch, yo,
(pull thru 2 loops), 3 times
pin – broomstick lace pin – tool used to make the broomstick lace
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
hdc – yo , pull up a loop, yo draw thru all 3 loops on hook
sk – skip
dec – decrease – yo, insert hook in designated stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook in
next st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, draw thru all 5 loops
ROW 1: (ch 4, tr in 4th ch from hook) 15 times.
ROW 2: ch 1, working around the post of the trebles of the previous row, 5 sc in next tr
to end of row. (75 sc)
ROW 3 (first half of broomstick lace): place loop from last sc of row 2 over the
broomstick pin, pull yarn to make it snug on pin, but don't "choke" it. Now, working in
back loops only of the sc's, *insert hook in next sc, pull up a loop, place loop over pin.
Repeat from * to end of row. (75 loops)
 
ROW 4 (second half of broomstick lace): insert hook under 5 loops and carefully remove
them from the pin. yo, pull loop thru all 5 loops on hook, ch 1, 5 sc in the same 5 loops.
*Insert hook under next 5 loops and carefully remove from pin, 5 sc in these loops.
Repeat from * until all loops have been worked off pin. (15 groups of 5 loops and 75 sc)
Join with a sl st to first sc.
Begin working in rounds on row 5

Poncho measures 30" across and 44" long before it's folded in half.
Gauge: 6 sts = 2" and 3 rows = 2"
